Another costly divisional loss by the Eagles has them reeling behind their rookie quarterback while the Falcons will have an extended week to prepare for this game after their Thursday night victory over the Bucs.

Matt Ryan is emerging as a possible MVP candidate while Carson Wentz is looking to regain the rhythm from the first few weeks after struggling of late.
Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons are 6-3 but also started 6-1 last season before losing 8 straight and ending the season with 8-8 record – which did not render a playoff spot.
Aside from the high quality play of Matt Ryan and the Falcons offense, the defense has been much improved this season which has played a huge role in the Falcons hot start.
They have been pressuring the quarterback – 8th in the NFL in sacks with 21 – and winning the turnover battle: +3 differential this season after being a -7 differential last season.
The pressure they have been putting on the quarterback will be crucial against Philadelphia – who have been struggling to protect Wentz recently but benefit from the offensive playcalling which features mostly short, quick passes.

The Falcons secondary has been very poor this season as Atlanta has been the NFL’s 2nd worst passing defense. They have allowed a league worst 23 passing touchdowns and opposing quarterbacks hold a 102.2 passer rating against them.
Ryan surely will be looking for his main man in Julio Jones as the Eagles lack the physicality and speed outside to stick with Jones.
The strength of the Eagles defense is up the middle with their defensive line, interior linebackers, and safeties being the steadying force behind one of the NFC’s top defenses.
The challenge in this game for the Falcons will be avoiding turnovers as the Eagles are one of the league’s best at forcing turnovers – particularly at home.
Philadelphia Eagles
Four losses in their last 5 games have the Eagles reeling and looking upwards at the rest of the NFC East.
Wentz got off to a great start but has struggled mightily in the last few games. He has 5 turnovers in the last 3 games and is averaging just 6.3 yards per attempt in the last 4 games.
Until this past week against the Giants, Wentz hadn’t even been attempting many passes down the field. He did against the Giants but two of them were picked off – which turned into 14 Giants points.

The Eagles have been the league’s 3rd worst offense at converting on third down – which is largely due to the nature of the offense that looks to knock out short yardage in the early downs.
But, to a beat playoff caliber team in the Falcons – particularly one that can put points on the board, they will need to make the most of their drives and make sure they come out of the red zone with points – something they failed to do against the Giants.
Ryan against the rookie will come down to how committed the Eagles are to staying patient with their young quarterback and if they are willing to let him air it out and take the interceptions that may come with his great downfield arm.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Philadelphia is 11-19 ATS in NFC games since 2014.
- Atlanta is 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games following a SU win.
- Over is 8-1 in Atlanta’s last 9 games overall.
- Over is 15-3 in Philadelphia’s last 18 games following a SU loss.
- Over is 19-11 in Philadelphia’s last 30 NFC games.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Over 51.0
While the Eagles defense has been very good, I like the Falcons coming off a long week led by the top receiver in football this season in Julio Jones.
Wentz could get his first taste of the Philly boo-birds if he struggles early on Sunday but should be able to capitalize on a porous Atlanta secondary.
NFL Free Score Prediction: Atlanta 31 – Philadelphia 27
The Atlanta offense is very well balanced and will be able to wear out the good Philadelphia defense. I like Ryan to make a few more plays than Wentz in this one as Atlanta takes a close, high-scoring one on the road.
