The Atlanta Falcons continued their winning ways on Sunday in a blowout of the first place Washington Redskins to get back to .500 after a disastrous start.
The Browns’ surprisingly good start feels like a distant memory now. Cleveland wasn’t up to stopping Tyreek Hill and the high-flying Chiefs’ offense and dropped its fourth consecutive.
The Falcons were aided by ten Washington penalties on Sunday but the offense clearly outworked the defense, en route to nearly 500 yards in total, including 350 through the air by Matt Ryan.
Ryan connected with three different receivers for touchdowns, including Julio Jones for the first time all season. It was the longest Jones had gone in his career without catching a TD.
Tevin Coleman and Ito Smith pretty much split the rushing duties. Coleman ran thirteen times for eighty-eight yards and Smith ran ten times for sixty. Smith scored on the ground and Coleman caught two TDs from Ryan.
The Falcons have won three in a row following a 1–4 start and are now the first team on outside, looking in, on the NFC playoff picture. They trail Minnesota and Carolina in the wild card and still lag three games behind the Saints in the division.
Atlanta hasn’t completed the comeback yet but it has bought itself some time. The Falcons have this winnable road game, followed by a home game against the Cowboys.
If they can get to 6–4, they’ll feel pretty good about things going into Week 12 against the Saints. They have that one and one more against the Panthers, in terms of head-to-head games that could help them gain ground in the division.
Cleveland lost its first game following Hue Jackson’s firing a week ago. Interim Head Coach Greg Williams couldn’t provide enough novelty to get a win against the AFC-best Chiefs but it wasn’t all bad for Cleveland.
The offense got a makeover, too, in light of Todd Haley leaving town with Jackson. Baker Mayfield threw the ball forty-two times for just under 300 yards. A lot of his passes went to running back Duke Johnson Jr., who was under-used in Haley’s offense.
Johnson caught all nine of his targets seventy-eight yards and two touchdowns. It would appear he’s back on the fantasy radar in PPR leagues especially, with the changes to the offense.
But the defense was no match for Patrick Mahomes and Kareem Hunt. Mahomes threw another interception but finished with 375 yards and three touchdowns. Hunt ran for ninety-one yards and two touchdowns, plus a fifty-yard touchdown catch. Hunt could be Mahomes’ greatest competitor for MVP right now.
The Falcons’ offense might not be quite as dangerous as Kansas City’s but it’s close. This game will likely go just about the same way, a week later.
