The Arizona Cardinals will kick off their 2021 campaign with a cross country trip to the Music City to take on the Tennessee Titans.
Arizona Cardinals
Arizona will enter their 3rd season with the Kyler Murray and Kling Kingsbury combo. The Cardinals had a disappointing end to their season with losses in their final 2 games to finish at 8-8.
In the season finale, Arizona fell on the road to NFC West rival the Los Angeles Rams 19-7. With a win, the Cardinals would have clinched a playoff spot for the 1st time in 6 seasons. Kyler Murray sat out the majority of the game due to an an ankle injury suffered on the team’s first drive.
The Cardinals front office made some veteran acquisitions in the off-season by bringing in DE JJ Watt, WR AJ Green, RB James Connor, and CB Malcolm Butler. Butler made a surprise move last week by announcing his retirement and leaving the team scrambling to find his replacement.
Tennessee Titans
Tennessee completed their 5th straight winning season with an 11-5 record and clinched the franchises first AFC South title since 2008 and only the 3rd time in the teams short existence.
The Titans reached the playoffs for the 3rd time in the last 4 years and ran into the Baltimore Ravens once again. Just a year before, the Titans knocked off the Super Bowl favorite Ravens in Baltimore 28-12 as 10 point underdogs.
This go around wasn’t as glorious as the Titans jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the 1st quarter but were stifled the rest of the game and lost 20-13.
Last year was a disappointing way to go out for Tennessee after having one of the best offenses in the league and winning the AFC South. Throughout the year the defense continually held the team back as they gave up the 5th most yards per game (4th worst in pass defense). The Titans were on pace to be the worst 3rd down defense ever and just managed to avoid having the least amount of sacks in a season by a team.
Tennessee had some big losses of the offensive side as starters WR Corey Davis and TE Jonnu Smith secured big paydays on the market as well as a surprising release of RT Dennis Kelly. Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith also left to take the Atlanta Falcons heading coach job.
The Titans went to work in bringing in more talent on both sides and grabbed players such as WR Julio Jones, WR Josh Reynolds, DE Denico Autry, OLB Bud Depree, and CB Janoris Jenkins. The team also drafted CB Caleb Farley and OT Dillon Radunz in the first 2 rounds.
NFL Betting Trends:
- The Cardinals were 4-4 on the road in 2020
- The Titans were 5-3 at home in 2020
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Titans -3
This is a game that the public has quickly sided with a team which I agree as well and that is the Tennessee Titans. Arizona was dealt a tough hand by having to travel across the country for their opening game. Tennessee will be able to save themselves with no travel and get more work accomplished.
Outside of the travel, I just feel that Tennessee is the better and more complete team. This is a team that was one of the best offensive units in the league last year and filled the gap of Corey Davis with Julio Jones. The Jones/Brown receiving tandem gives the Titans arguably the best pass catching duo in the NFL.
The team also went big in the off-season to overhaul their bottom of the league defense by going younger and brining in outside talent. Tennessee focused on their 4th worst pass defense by letting go Malcolm Butler, Kenny Vaccaro, and Adoree Jackson from the secondary. They brought in Janoris Jenkins and drafted Caleb Farley to replace the group. The Titans also signed DL Denico Autry and OLB Bud Depree in hopes to generate more sacks.
I see Tennessee controlling this game offensively with all of their playmakers and their new look defense to do enough to slow down Murray and the Cardinals offense.
