Arizona’s season went by the wayside a long time ago. Los Angeles has been keeping up with its NFC counterparts before they Chargered in Week 11 against the Broncos.
The team trying to keep pace with Kansas City in the AFC West lost a fourth quarter lead, despite dominating the total yardage battle. Now, Los Angeles will be that much more desperate for a win in another game it should win.
A week after losing a tight game with Kansas City in which the Cardinals held the Chiefs to a season-low in points and yardage, Arizona lost at home to the lowly Raiders.
Oakland had won just one game prior and played like it for most of the game, giving up a couple of big plays to the Cardinals and committing Raider-like penalties.
But Arizona was even worse. Josh Rosen threw to interceptions and completed just nine passes on the afternoon, despite throwing three TDs. Jermaine Gresham committed a senseless unnecessary roughness penalty late in the fourth quarter that led to Oakland driving down the field for the game-winning field goal.
David Johnson rushed for 137 yards and had another long run called back for a penalty. He’s gotten it going just a tad after a terribly slow start to the season. Rosen connected with Larry Fitzgerald for two touchdown passes, though they were Fitz’s only two catches in the game.
This should be a game LA dominates, unless Arizona’s defense, which has stood strong most of the year, plays really well. You wonder if it will continue the sprint through the finish line when the race has been long lost, though.
Los Angeles Chargers
It’s been a fantastic season for the Chargers, at least it had been before Week 11. Phillip Rivers threw for over 400 yards and the combination of running backs ran for about another 100 but the Chargers blew a fourth quarter lead and lost at home, 23–22.
Rivers completed a first-down pass in Denver territory to Antonio Gates with less than three minutes to go, LA holding onto a 22–20 lead. The Broncos had no timeouts left; it looked like it was the Chargers’ win.
But they threw on third down after the two-minute warning and it went incomplete. Instead of chewing another forty seconds left, the Chargers punted with just less than two minutes to go and pinned Denver.
But two long passes, one to Emmanuel Sanders and the other to Cortland Sutton, was all Denver needed to get into field goal range. Brandon McManus nailed the game-winner as time expired on the Chargers.
Ten wins and a playoff spot is still likely for LA, so long as it bounces back and wins this game. The Chargers are always wont to Charger but I’d be surprised if they let two in a row get away at home.
