The Cardinals look like they have a great opportunity to push their record to 3-0 when they visit the winless Jaguars on Sunday. Arizona looked dominant in their only other road game this season in a 38-13 win over the Titans, but only beat the Vikings by 1-point at home last week.
The Jaguars are experiencing the expected growing pains that come with starting the #1 pick in the draft at QB right out of the gate and with Urban Meyer trying to make the transition from college to the pros. Jacksonville needs to only look across the field to realize things do get better, as that’s the same situation Arizona was in with Kyler Murray and Kliff Kingsbury were in just a couple years ago.
Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona offense looks like they’ll put up another big output on Sunday. Through two weeks the Cardinals rank 2nd in total yards, 3rd in passing yards, and 2nd in points scored at 36.0 ppg. That air raid attack as well as mobility from Murray has also opened up the run game for 119.5 yards/game.
Murray is licking his chops to get back out there on Sunday after going 29/36 for 400 yards on the dot with 3 TD last week against the Vikings. The former #1 pick did throw 2 INT, but on the season is completing 73.5% of his passes.
Murray gets a matchup with a Jaguars defense that is in the bottom 5 in pass yards allowed this season. Tyrod Taylor lit up Jacksonville for 291 and 2 TD passes in week 1 but also ran for 40 yards on 4 carries which is something Murray is apt to do. Teddy Bridgewater threw for 328 last week vs. the Jags.
For as good as their offense has been, there are still some questions surrounding the Arizona defense coming into week 3. The Cardinals were great in holding Tennessee to 86 yards rushing and 162 passing in the opener, but allowed Dalvin Cook to run for 131 and Kirk Cousins to throw 3 TDs last wee in the 34-33 Arizona win.
Jacksonville Jaguars
It’s been a rough couple opening weeks for Urban Meyer and Trevor Lawrence. The Jaguars lost to the Texans 37-21 in the season opener as -3 point road favorites but regressed in week 2 in a 23-13 defeat at home to the Broncos.
On the bright side #1 pick Trevor Lawrence did throw for 332 yards and 3 TD vs. Houston. He also tossed 3 INTs as a rookie is apt to do. Vic Fangio drew up a defense that totally confused Lawrence last week, as the rookie was just 14/33 for 118 yards while tossing another 2 INTs.
The good news for Jacksonville is that the Cardinals don’t have near the defense as the Broncos, who are top 5 in the league after two weeks. The bad news is that the Cardinals are a top 10 team vs. the pass but 26th vs. the run – and the Jaguars have no running game as just 75.5 ypg.
The Jaguars defense has their own issues coming into week 3, giving up 30.0 ppg through two weeks and being the 3rd worst team in the league in total yards allowed. It’s definitely a ‘start’ week for Kyler Murray in fantasy leagues.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Cardinals are 11-5-2 ATS last 18 road games
- Cardinals are 4-10 ATS last 14 as a favorite
- Cardinals are 3-8 ATS last 11 overall
- Jaguars are 1-4 ATS last 5 home games
- Jaguars are 1-5 ATS last 6 overall
4* Free Week 3 NFL Betting Prediction: Cardinals -7.5
It might sound weird but this sounds like a get right game for Lawrence and the Jaguars. Jacksonville was exploited last week, but Denver might be really good this year with the combo of the efficiency of Bridgewater and the defensive mindedness of Vic Fangio. The loss was a great learning experience for Lawrence.
Arizona has nowhere near the defense of the Broncos, even though the Cardinals looked pretty good in the season opener against Tennessee. Make no mistake, Murray and Co. will get theirs on Sunday, they just won’t stop Jacksonville enough to cover the -7.5 spread.
