Urban Meyer is now the coach and his college credentials are as good as they can be. After some time on TV though it is possible that he might not be up to the challenge of leading an NFL team for the first time in his career.
NFL Colts Predictions & Handicapping Insight
2021/22 NFL Team Predictions – Jacksonville Jaguars
- Jaguars 2021 Win Total NFL Odds: 6.5 (Over -110/Under -110)
- Jacksonville Jaguars AFC South Odds: +2800
- Jacksonville Jaguars AFC Championship Odds: +5000
- Jacksonville Jaguars 2022 Super Bowl Odds: +13000
Key Additions:
- DT Malcolm Brown
- CB Shaquill Griffin
- S Rayshawn Jenkins
- WR Marvin Jones Jr.
- TE Chris Manhertz
The Jags finished last in the league and got the first pick in the draft as a result. There was no drama in who to select with Trevor Lawrence being the choice. Rookie QBs can struggle in this league so much improvement on the field is unlikely.
There are no bigger additions than Meyer and Lawrence. The first three guys should all upgrade a defense that was second to last in scoring and yards allowed.
Jones is a pro at receiver and that group is probably now the strength of the team. Manhertz is around to make sure the blocking is as solid as it can be for Lawrence.
Key Losses:
- QB Jacoby Brissett
- QB Philip Rivers
- LB Anthony Walker
They thought they had the Q situation nailed with the acquisition of Wentz. Rivers retired but you have to bet they would have been loving having Brissett still in the fold. I think he can be an average starter in the NFL.
Darius Leonard got all the attention at linebacker and deservedly so, it looked like he was making all of the tackles. When he wasn’t it was Walker who was. You can’t pay everyone though and they decided to pay Leonard who just inked a big deal.
2021 Jacksonville Jaguars Predictions: Offseason Analysis
The theme for the Jaguars for this season is “change”. The Jags had become irrelevant but with the hiring of Urban Meyer as head coach and the drafting of Trevor Lawrence, there is legitimate intrigue now.
Last year the offense was poor as they finished 28th in yards and 30th in points. Bringing in Lawrence is an upgrade but now backup QB Gardner Minshew was not the problem last season.
In addition to Lawrence, they drafted his Clemson teammate RB Travis Etienne. That gives the Jaguars another weapon, plain and simple. James Robinson rushed for more than 100o yards last season but Etienne will be better. He makes them more explosive.
The splashy additions were on offense but for the Jags to get more competitive they need to get better on defense. They went the veteran route there bringing in the likes of Malcolm Brown, Shaq Griffin, and Rayshawn Jenkins, all of who are projected to start. None of those are home run gets but subtle upgrades. If they cab get into the 20s from the 30s on defense some results might follow.
This is going to be an interesting season for the Jags. There are a ton of moving parts and the odds are it might take half a season before it looks like it is coming together.
Jacksonville is undergoing a full reboot. It might not be entertaining all the time but it is interesting.
2021 Jacksonville Jaguars Win Total Prediction:
When you win only one game some improvement is definitely expected and the Jaguars definitely do look improved. The market does seem a little ambitious though with the total they have set.
It will definitely help that the Jags get to play Houston twice this season. That team looks like the worst in NFL and they are in the same division. Jacksonville travels to Houston to start the season.
A win in Week 1 looks like it will be a requirement if they are going to get that over but I am not really sold. Even if they get it they are likely to be underdogs in their first two home games against Denver and Arizona. The next three look like losses including a trip to London to face Miami, follow by the bye.
After the I see no gimmes other than a home date with the Texans. Maybe a road trip to New York to face the Jets is a win as that team is not any better than the Jags and even though they had the second choice of QBs in the draft they might have selected the wrong one. We will see.
At New England and home to Indianapolis to close the season are going to be games against fringe playoff teams so they are not going to take the week off against Jacksonville.
Every time I run the schedule I get to 3 or 4 wins. It is hard to see much upside with this team and the extra game on the schedule can only do so much for them. They should be more competitive than they were a year ago but absolute wins are going to be tough.
