Texans 2021 Season Preview
Looking for 2021 Houston Texans Predictions? This franchise is a mess right now. They only won four games a year ago and besting that total seems very unlikely this season.
Deshaun Watson has posted some great numbers in his career but even before his legal troubles popped up he was trying to work his way out of Houston. His status is tough to navigate.
I think you have to assume that he is not going to be with the team due to trade or other. Without him, this team is going to struggle to compete. There are going to be some ugly results this year.
NFL Texans Predictions & Handicapping Insight
2021/22 NFL Team Predictions – Houston Texans
- Texans 2021 Win Total NFL Odds: 4(Over -105/Under -115)
- Houston Texans AFC South Odds: +2800
- Houston Texans AFC Championship Odds: +15000
- Houston Texans 2022 Super Bowl Odds: +20000
Key Additions:
- QB Tyrod Taylor
- DE Jordan Jenkins
- DE Shaq Lawson
Taylor is becoming quite the journeyman now. It seems unlikely that Watson is going to suit up for the Texans this season and he is their next best option. At least to start the season.
Houston is looking to find some production from the defensive end position with JJ Watt having moved on. Jenkins and Lawson have potential but I am not keen on them suddenly becoming differencemakers. Especially on a defense that is likely to be bad.
Key Losses:
- DE JJ Watt
- WR Will Fuller IV
- LB Bernardrick McKinney
Watt is the most decorated defensive player in the league not named Aaron Donald. His best days were behind him though.
Fuller is a deep threat who led the team in TD receptions a year ago. Chris Conley is a cheaper replacement, but probably not as good.
McKinney is a pro at linebacker but not a difference maker for this group. They are going to plug and play with Christian Kirksey, formerly of the Packers.
2021 Houston Texans Predictions: Offseason Analysis
If you don’t have a quarterback you are lost in this league. The Texans had one and then they didn’t with Deshaun Watson asking out of Houston before all his legal troubles started mounting.
Tyrod Taylor can be OK…if he is surrounded by a solid roster. That is not the case here and he might be running around for his life. Thirs round pick Davis Mills might get some starters but it seems unlikely they are going to start the season with him under center.
Last year the Texans were second to last running the ball and that was with a mobile QB and a strong passing offense. Some of that was that they were often behind by too much that they had to let Watson try and bail them out but it was also ineptitude. This season the running game looks like it will be even more important but they are probably no more capable of doing do.
JJ Watt is past his prime but he was still the Texans best pass rusher last season leading the team in sacks with 5. They are hoping that some younger legs can have just as much impact but I am not optimistic. Even though he was not what he once was you still had to account for Watt, the new guys are just guys.
Zach Cunningham is their best player on defense. He is right in the middle and tackles everything in sight. They were last against the rush last season but it was not his fault. Their defensive line got pushed around up front and the guys they brought in on the edge are not going to solve that problem.
This is probably the worst roster in football right now, and I am still technically counting Watson as part of the team. When he is officially gone it looks even more pathetic.
2021 Houston Texans Win Total Prediction:
This team only won four games a year ago, with Watson. Without him, not even an extra game is likely to get them to that total again.
One thing that helps is playing in a weak division, one that just got weaker with the Colts losing their top quarterback. They get to play Jacksonville twice and that gives them a chance.
One of those games against the Jaguars is at home to start the season. That is an absolute must-win as they take on the combination of Urban Meyer and Trevor Lawrence in their first NFL games. If they can’t get that one they could easily not win a game all season.
Other than when they visit Jacksonville in mid-December I do not see them having much chance of winning a road tilt this season. There are going to be some ugly numbers when they hit the road at teams like Buffalo.
Even home games against teams like the Jets or the Chargers don’t look like good situations as they are playing those teams later in the season when they should be improved.
Every time I run through the schedule I see only 2 or 3 wins. Oddly they might be 2-1 if they beat the Jags in the opener and then Carolina in week 3 on a Thursday. After those games, there are going to be a lot of smackdowns.
