In the offseason the front office went heavy on loading up on options for Jameis Winston to pass to, so now it’s on the former Florida State product to take the next step and get this franchise that selected him with the No. 1 overall selection in the 2015 draft into the playoffs.
2017 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Predictions: Roster Changes
Winston and Mike Evans were able to do some great things last year. The problem was they weren’t getting a ton of help from other sources.
So after Winston put together his second 4,000-yard season before his 23rd birthday, general manager Jason Licht went out and got him one of the best pass catching options available on the free agent market.
Licht inked DeSean Jackson to a three-year, $35 million deal. The 30-year-old burner will line up along side Evans to form a great one-two punch at the position.
And Licht wasn’t done there as he added another wide receiver in the third round of the draft in Penn State product Chris Godwin, who many had projected to be a second-round selection.
And the bigger draft addition came in the first round with the selection of Alabama tight end O.J. Howard. In a deep tight end class, Howard was at the front of the class.
His talent and athleticism have him in position to be one of the elite players at his position for years to come. The defense got some help as well with second-round safety Justin Evans.
2017 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Predictions: Offense
After the Bucs extended the duo of Winston and Evans as far as they could last year, this season’s offense will feature a lot more talent at the skill positions, and should be better for it as Winston looks for his third consecutive 4,000-yard season to begin his career.
The passing game should be more explosive, but the running game has a lot of question marks. Doug Martin will miss the first month of the season due to a suspension that led to him checking himself into rehab.
Jacquizz Rodgers and Charles Sims will occupy the position in September, and there’s no telling what kind of shape Martin will be in when he returns. And even when he does, the offensive line needs to hold together better than it did a year ago.
Both Evans and Jackson rely on getting down the field to be successful through the air, so left tackle Donovan Smith will need to protect Winston’s blind side to let those plays develop.
2017 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Predictions: Defense
Tampa’s defense improved by leaps and bounds in the second half of last season. They’ll be expected to remain at that high level as sophomores Noah Spence and Vernon Hargreaves continue to improve their games.
2017 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Handicapping: (Strengths/Weaknesses)
Defensive tackle Chris Baker joins Gerald McCoy to form of the best interior duos in the NFL. But the Winston-Evans connection is the strength of this Bucs team.
The offensive line needs to figure things out. As does kicker Roberto Aguayo, who missed nine of 31 field goal attempts last season.
2017 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Prediction (Final Record): 9-7
The Bucs are a sexy pick for a lot of outlets this season, but all that’s done is devalue them on the futures board.
Tampa taking a step forward is to be expected this season, but the NFC South is much improved so getting over the hump and into the playoffs will be a tall order for a team that’s been less boom and more bust in recent seasons.
