And after last year’s disappointing wild card round loss to the Chiefs, the front office restocked the shelves to make this year’s edition of the Raiders even deeper, and more talented than last year’s squad.
2017 Oakland Raiders Predictions: Roster Changes
There are some financial issues likely coming for the Raiders. This year they faced the task of re-upping Derek Carr, and did so with a new five-year contract.
But they’re not out of the woods yet, as the other two key members of their young core will be asking for new contracts in the near future, with linebacker Khalil Mack set to renegotiate next year, and wide receiver Amari Cooper due the year after that.
Even still, McKenzie was able to go out and add some nice pieces to this Raiders team which will have them in position to compete again this season, and if Carr can remain healthy into the postseason, they’ll pose a test to the elite teams in the AFC.
The marquee acquisition of the offseason was Marshawn Lynch.
After a year off, Lynch returns to run behind one of the best offensive lines in football, and while his last season in Seattle was hardly memorable, he was then running behind one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL. And given his hard-nosed running style, a year off might have done him some good.
McKenzie also went out and got tight end Jared Cook to shore up a position that’s been a weakness for the team for the better part of a decade. Lynch’s addition made Latavius Murray expendable, and he signed on with the Minnesota Vikings.
The Raiders also rolled the dice in the first round of April’s draft and that appears to have worked out.
Ohio State cornerback Gareon Conley had some league troubles swirling around him during draft week, which led to his stock plummeting, and the Raiders securing a top-10 talent at No. 24 overall.
With Conley’s legal issues seemingly behind him, the team now has a new No. 1 cover man at a discounted price.
2017 Oakland Raiders Predictions: Offense
Cooper and Michael Crabtree are one of the best receiving duos in football, and the addition of Cook will present a matchup problem for opposing defenses over the middle of the field that just hasn’t been there for this team in recent years.
Lynch won’t be called on to do too much given the strength of the passing game, and he’ll also be able to take a breath whenever he needs to thanks to two solid backups in DeAndre Washington and Jalen Richard.
The Raiders also boast one of the league’s best offensive lines, which boosts the running game, and helps limit Carr’s turnovers.
2017 Oakland Raiders Predictions: Defense
Conley wasn’t the only draft day addition to a defense in need of some reinforcements.
Second round safety Obi Melifonwu brings additional athleticism to the secondary, and third round defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes should immediately fill a hole along the defensive line.
The linebacking corps needed some help, but that was never addressed in the offseason.
2017 Oakland Raiders Handicapping: (Strengths/Weaknesses)
The team’s offensive line helps make the passing game as dynamic as it is, and could elevate Marshawn Lynch to Pro Bowler status in his first season back in the NFL.
There are holes littered throughout the defense, and smart opposing offensive coordinators will find a way to exploit them.
2017 Oakland Raiders Prediction (Final Record): 11-5
As good as the Raiders were last season, there’s certainly still room for improvement on this squad, and with the front office helping that cause with some smart offseason additions, the Raiders are worth consideration on all futures bets.
