Matthew Stafford seemed to finally have the switch go off in his head entering that game, and was considered by many to be a candidate in the MVP race following another 4,000 yard season in his first campaign without Calvin Johnson.
But the blame for the team’s shortcomings fall more on the defense, and that led to general manager Bob Quinn aggressively focusing on that defense in the offseason.
2017 Detroit Lions Predictions: Roster Changes
The defense was the focus of Quinn’s plan this offseason, starting with pass-rusher Cornelius Washington, who’ll have an expanded role after making the most of limited snaps in Chicago last season.
The linebacking corps got a big boost with the signing of linebacker Paul Worrilow and the addition of Florida’s Jarrad Davis with the 21st pick in the draft. They’ll fill in for DeAndre Levy, who only appeared in five games over his final two seasons with the team.

The offensive line could have taken a couple big hits with the losses of Larry Warford and Riley Reiff, but Quinn went out and spent big money to bring in T.J. Lang and Rick Wagner to replace them.
Anquan Boldin was a good safety valve and red zone option for Stafford, but he’s gone now. Outside of that, the offensive arsenal remains largely unchanged.
2017 Detroit Lions Predictions: Offense
Stafford is at the helm of the offense once again, and this team will go as far as he’ll take them. If he plays the way he did down the stretch last season, the Lions will be tough to beat.
Marvin Jones and Stafford found some magic early in the season but were never able to recapture that. Golden Tate remains the go-to guy and figures to get a heavy target volume again.
With Boldin gone, tight end Eric Ebron figures to take a big step forward in his third year in the league. The former first-round pick figures to see his target share improve dramatically in the red zone after curiously being overlooked there the past two seasons.

The running game is going to depend largely on the health of Ameer Abdullah, who’s shown flashes of being the guy the team thought they were getting when he’s been able to stay on the field.
Theo Riddick’s passing-down role is locked in. He figures to wind up in the 60-70 reception range once again.
2017 Detroit Lions Predictions: Defense
Jarrad Davis needs to be an impact player from the get-go if the defense is going to be respectable, and Ziggy Ansah needs to get back to being himself after two high ankle sprains slowed him last season.
D.J. Hayden was added to the secondary to improve the team’s cornerback depth. Cornerback Darius Slay is one of the best in the league at the position.
2017 Detroit Lions Handicapping: (Strengths/Weaknesses)
Stafford proved he can keep the passing game going without Calvin Johnson.
He really figured things out in the second half of last season, and if he can keep that going, and help Ebron develop into a consistent weapon, they’ll be able to put up a lot of points behind the best offensive line he’s played behind.

The team’s pass rush ranked 30th in sacks last season. They’ll need to do a better job of getting to the quarterback.
2017 Detroit Lions Prediction (Final Record): 8-8
The Lions have lost nine consecutive playoff game, and haven’t qualified for the postseason in consecutive seasons since the mid-1990s. In Stafford’s tenure, they followed up their first two playoff appearances with sub-.500 records the following season.
The Lions are a team to avoid on the futures board this season.
