After not getting the result they would have liked in last season’s game, the Patriots look to return there once again this season, but will do so without one half of that Belichick-Brady duo for the first four games of the season.
Patriots fans must have thought they got away with one a year ago when Brady was able to skirt justice and bypass a league-issued four-game suspension for his role in DeflateGate, but instead, the penalty was merely delayed a year.
2016 Patriots Roster Changes
The Patriots are typically at the front of the pack when it comes to staying ahead of the trends, and this offseason was no different as the team added hulking defensive tackle Terrance Knighton, who should enjoy additional success in New England after the league implemented a rule outlawing chop blocks.
Tight end Martellus Bennett comes over from the Chicago Bears, and sets the team up to return to the two tight end offense that was so successful when Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez were both entering the prime years of their respective careers.
One of the stranger moves of the offseason was the Patriots shipping elite edge rusher Chandler Jones to the Arizona Cardinals for an underwhelming haul. By all accounts, Jones is at the peak of his career and was a key figure in the Patriots’ huddle. Nevertheless, if there’s a franchise that can get away with making a move like that, it’s New England. They’ve been right on these kinds of things enough over the years that they get the benefit of the doubt on this one – for now.
The return of Dante Scarnecchia should do wonders for the offensive line.
2016 New England Patriots Predictions: Offense
The Patriots’ offense will look a little different for the first four weeks of the season when Brady serves his suspension. Jimmy Garoppolo will have the training wheels taken off, but this is a move that was supposed to happen a year ago, so the team should be ready for it.
It’ll be interesting to see how much the team uses two tight end sets in the wake of the Bennett signing.
Brady should put up big numbers upon his return in Week 5. He’ll be motivated. With Dion Lewis and Julian Edelman continuing to improve, this will be one of the deepest and most talented groups of skill position players he’s ever had to work with.
2016 New England Patriots Predictions: Defense
It’ll be interesting to see how the team adjusts without Jones. He was a key figure in the locker room and on the field – both for his ability to get to the quarterback, and as a leader and motivator.
The team’s secondary was a major question mark entering last season, but that concern was quickly erased with a young group proving they could hold down the fort on the back-end. Linebacker Jamie Collins is one of the most underrated defensive players in football.
2016 New England Patriots Analysis:
The Patriots have been a regular fixture atop the AFC standings, and there’s little reason to believe they won’t make a run at the top spot in the conference once again this season.
Holding serve in Garoppolo’s four games will be key, but if he can hand the keys to the car back to Brady with the team at 2-2, a 13-win season will still be very much in reach.
Come playoff time, a motivated Brady could do some big things if his deep group of skill position players stays healthy. In what projects to be a down year for the AFC, the Patriots figure to once again be the class of the conference.
