Xavier and St. Johns square off on Wednesday night at Carnesecca Arena for a big battle between two Big East programs chasing the 7 & 8 seed towards the conference tournament. All right, well, it isn’t so big in the grand scheme of things but there is reason to believe that this will still be a pretty good game… maybe?!
I know, even when I took this game preview off the board I thought about what the line would be and what call I would have to make to look good. So, I think we all know that Xavier is basically falling apart in front of our eyes trying to shake off a 4-game losing skid having lost 6 of their last 7 outings as well. With that, the line setters seem to think they ‘might’ be able to pull a win of this game with such a wishy-washy line of about even odds.
St Johns followed up their win over Xavier in the first meeting between these teams with a win over Butler but they have since lost their last 2 affairs coming into this game. The Johnnies have suffered a 3-point loss to Creighton and a 5-point loss to DePaul headed to tonight’s home contest. St. John’s is only 11 – 7 from their first 18 home games and this will be their final game at Carnesecca Arena this season.

Xavier Musketeers
When you are struggling to find wins I am not one to think that road wins will come n easier for any program in the nation for the most part. Having to shake off a 4-game losing streak and simply not playing well lately as a whole, I am surprised the oddsmakers are only asking us to lay a basket to fade the Musketeers tonight.
Since the 83 – 76 home loss to the team across the floor tonight, the Musketeers have lost to UConn, Providence, and Seton Hall to account for this current 4-game stretch of Ls on the ledger.
Despite the impressive outing to get Providence to overtime the loss to Seton Hall last time out showed us a lack-luster performance as Jack Nunge and Paul Scruggs were held to a combined 15 points in the 82 – 66 loss.
Nunge leads this team normally grabbing 13 & 7 a night so he will need to finish out strong if this team hopes to get a win in their final road game of the regular season. Xavier has gone 4 – 5 from their 9 away outings year so this would be a big win to bring that up to .500 to end the campaign.
Xavier gets Georgetown to wrap up the regular season so we almost have to give them that win at home to prepare for the big East Conference tournament ahead. With a win tonight and a win over the Hoyas, Xavier could land the 7-seed in the final standings.
St. Johns Red Storm
The Red Storm can’t do much better than 7th place in the final standings so they will need to win this game and take out Marquette on the road to take that spot. The line setters are not screaming that the Johnnies should be winning this game but I might scream that they will! <<< Notice the exclamation point, I know!
St. Johns has been a pretty good team this season despite what their record shows. To be honest, I am more impressed by the Johnnies than I am with Xavier at this point of the season simply from the close losses too. Being a bad team brings ugly losses and you can see the fight this team is showing trying to build any momentum to the Big East tourney. We all know there is no post-season invitations coming for either of these two programs unless they steal the spot with a run through the finals.
Even the loss to DePaul last time out showed us that this team can score with anyone and they should give Xavier fits at home tonight.
Julian Champagnie is going to be on the floor all night and you can expect that he will navigate his way to a 20-point showing. Champagnie is leading this Johnnie squad putting up 19 PPG and he is a stat-stuffer for sure.
Aaron Wheeler found his way to 20 points in the loss to DePaul and Posh Alexander continued to do what he does and that is coming off the bench to provide a spark. Alexander is 2nd on the depth chart putting up 14.6 PPG and he came away with 18 off the bench last time out.
