The Wyoming Cowboys are trying to chase down the #1 seed for the MWC tourney as the Boise State Broncos appear in that spot entering the week. All eyes will be on the San Diego State V Boise State affair on Tuesday night because of how big of an effect that outcome will shape the conference standings.
Could Wyoming end up the best team in the Mountain West Conference? Unfathomable, right? Another amazing fact is that these two programs are meeting for the 237th time as Wyoming holds a 136 – 100 edge in the all-time series with the Rams. These two teams have been playing each other so long that I think they have played in like 15 different conferences, LoL. It’s not 15 but these two teams have followed each other around no matter what reformations seem to happen. (Remember the Skyline Conference? Hmm hmm, sure you do because you were around from 1938 to 1962 watching college hoops, I know!
Even I was born in 69 and that shit makes me feel old, LoL Regardless, these two were playing when Colorado A&M wasn’t even Colorado State yet but history is just a lesson in the past. I dig on the stuff but you didn’t come here for that.
This is a huge game for both of these two programs each wants to arrive as top-seeds in the MWC tourney. The Rams lost the first meeting with Wyoming in Laramie, 84- 78, but it only ended up leading to a 5-game win streak to end up motivating this Rams program. That is until the loss to UNLV last time out in harsh fashion, 72 – 51, coming into this road game.
Wyoming Cowboys
Did you watch the San Diego State V Boise State game that ended late on the east coast last night? I stayed up watching it on CBS and what a game it was. So, after the last-possession thriller with that mad alley-oop jam from San Diego State to give them the 57 – 56 lead, the man who seemed to give the Aztecs the win ended up costing them the victory.
Mensah threw home a big jam and then he fouled Boise State who won the game from the free-throw line, 58 – 57. Now, that leaves Wyoming further behind the Broncos in the MWC standings. Wyoming is 11 – 2 why Boise improved to 13 – 2 in conference play so that could just about seal the deal for Boise State to take the top spot for the conference tourney.
After having their 6-game win streak snapped by New Mexico, the Cowboys got back to their winning ways last time out with a win over Air Force, 75 – 67. Head Coach Leff Linder has already done enough to land his squad in the NCAA Tournament and he is chasing another piece of post-season hardware. IF you recall, Linder took his Northern Colorado program to the CIT title in 2018 so he is certainly seen as a winner. Despite a 14 – 11 finish to the year in 2021, a renewed investment was made by everyone in Laramie and it has worked.
Graham Ike is worth the price of admission as he is still averaging over 21 PPG this season leading this team to win after win. Highlighting Ike’s accomplishments this year is a thesaurus alone and he almost averages a double-double. Ike is at 9.3 RPG and he has been a double-digit scorer in all 25 games this year. He has put up 11 double-doubles and his 18 boards against San Jose State the other night was just insane to watch. The dude is stupid and he has a good bit of help around him this season which is why this Wyoming squad has only suffered 4 losses.
Oh, Hunter Maldonado? Yeah, he puts up 19 PPG and drops off 6 dimes with a handful of boards a night too so the pair are just ballers. They both put up over 50% shooting from the floor and they both, they both, and they both just do it if you get my drift. It’s fun when you actually have a pair of teammates who can both go out and change a game and the Cowboys have that and then some
Colorado State Rams
A lot of people, including me, questions the strength of the schedule for the Rams this year, but they are proving that they can win big games in the MWC. The Rams had a good chance to be 12 – 3 in MWC play until the strange loss to UNLV last time out. Now with an 11 – 4 record in conference play, the Rams have only two games remaining after tonight but they close out the regular season against Boise State. That Boise State win tonight also affected the Rams who can now basically hope to be a 2-3 seed in the MWC tourney which is still not too shabby.
The Rams have to win this game at home to give them any chance to pass Wyoming in the standings, but Wyoming is not a weak travel team. The Cowboys are among the best road teams in college hoops so this line is a little precarious to me. The Rams are laying 6 points against the better Wyoming team because the Rams are home?
The Rams are 14 – 1 here and that is certainly a factor for the oddsmakers but this is going to put us all in a nice position to think dog. The Rams might come out on top tonight but they are not beating Wyoming by 7- 10 points and covering the chalk.
In the first game with Wyoming, the Rams got the Cowboys to overtime in Laramie but were unable to close the deal. Hunter Maldonado scored a career0high 35 points for Wyoming and David Roddy lead the way with 23 points for the Rams.
The Rams got 27 points from the bench in the loss and the Rams have done well to get production from their subs all season long. That is not something we can say about too many programs in 2022.
