West Virginia Mountaineers
West Virginia drew a tough task in its Big 12 opener with a trip to Kansas that it lost, 60–53.
But the Mountaineers covered by three-and-a-half and held KU to its second lowest scoring output of the season (it only scored fewer points in its loss to Villanova).

Kansas — and most especially center Udoka Azubuike — praised West Virginia freshman Oscar Tshiebwe after the game for his performance that included seventeen points and seventeen rebounds.
Tshiebwe grew up in the Congo and was discovered at a basketball camp put on by his countryman and NBA player, Bismack Biyombo.
He moved to America to play basketball in high school and stayed with an American family that previously hosted West Virginia big man Sagabe Konate, who is currently in the NBA’s G-League.
He’s already Bob Huggins’ leading scorer at over twelve points per game now and one of five guys on the roster that averages more than nine points per game.
The loss in the conference opener was just WVU’s second all season, the only other one coming in early December, by two, at St. John’s.
The Mountaineers hadn’t played a tough schedule up to that point (their best win was over Wichita State on a neutral floor, which is a top-40 win, at least according to Sports-Reference’s Simple Rating System) but a win over Ohio State last week validated their record.
Oklahoma State Cowboys
While West Virginia’s loss contained some positive takeaway, Oklahoma State lost by thirty-five points at Texas Tech on Saturday, 85–50.
Senior guard and team leading scorer, Lindy Waters scored thirteen points to meet his season average but he was the only Cowboy in double-figures. Texas Tech had four guys score at least as many as Waters.
A win on Big Monday is the best remedy for a team wounded after a weekend defeat. Only one of these teams will get its first conference victory in Stillwater.
Oklahoma State has the experience edge with three senior starters and a sophomore big man in Yor Anei who might just be able to matchup with Tshiebwe.
At 6’10” and 225 pounds, Anei averages eleven points per game and so will keep Tshiebwe active on defense. He has twenty-nine of Oklahoma State’s fifty-one blocks as a team, which ranks 109th in the country.
If Anei can neutralize Tshiebwe, Oklahoma State has to feel good about getting the best of the remaining matchups on its home floor.
