Washington State’s toughest stretch of the season comes here with this marking the start of a five-game stretch that features road trips to Oregon, UCLA, and USC followed by a back-to-back with arch rival Washington.
The Cougars were riding a five-game winning streak prior to dropping two straight games to Arizona and Arizona State at home. WASU had a halftime lead against the Sun Devils, but they couldn’t hold on, losing 58-55.
Michael Flowers has come over from South Alabama and given Kyle Smith’s team a lot of juice this season. The 6’3 guard averaged an impressive 21.1 ppg last season, and he scored 20+ points in both road wins over Cal and Stanford.
Flowers leads Washington State in scoring (13.8) and assists (3.1). Fellow newcomer Tyrell Roberts joins him in the backcourt, and he’s second on team with 11.2 ppg.
Efe Abogidi and Mouhamed Gueye give the Cougars a lot of length in the frontcourt. Abogidi, 6’10 sophomore, has blocked multiple shots in six of the last seven games, and he leads the team in rebounding (5.8).
Gueye posted his third double-double of the season in the loss to ASU, and he’s averaging 7.5 ppg and 5.7 rpg.
Oregon Ducks
Oregon has figured things out after a rough non-conference stretch. The Ducks have won nine of their last eleven, defeating both UCLA and USC on the road along the way. They suffered what head coach Dana Altman labeled “a bad loss” to an underwhelming Cal team at home that’d dropped their last ten games, 78-64.
Will Richardson has really locked in since the start of Pac-12 play. The 6’5 guard scored a career-high 28 points in the win over USC, and he scored 25 points in both wins over Utah.
Richardson is leading the Ducks 15.4 points per game and 3.5 assists per game.
Red River transfers Jacob Young (Texas) and De’Vion Harmon (Oklahoma) have come in and given Dana Altman’s team some life. Young has over 140 games of experience, and he scored a game-high 23 points in the road win over UCLA.
Harmon scored 21 points in the win over Stanford, and he’s third on the team in scoring (10.7). Fellow transfer Quincy Guerrier (Syracuse) scored a season-high 22 points against Colorado.
Eric Williams Jr. remains a strong, vocal presence on the court for Oregon. The 6’7 forward double-doubled in the road win over Oregon State, and he’s averaging 7.7 ppg and 5.3 rpg.
N’Faly Dante alters every shot, and give the Ducks a mountain in the middle.
