The Virginia Tech Hokies find themselves heavily favored at home on Saturday as the one-loss Deacons arrive at Cassell Coliseum.
This may be a 1-loss team but that Wake Forest schedule is about as weak as we have seen from an ACC program. Can we actually look even further ahead at the next 3 games for Wake Forest after they leave Blacksburg? Yeah, we will get to that because this Wake program filled its docket with cupcakes!
That is likely why the Hokies are favored by double-digits in this opening ACC showdown for both teams, but should they be? Just because the line setters believe the Hokies will cruise to a win doesn’t mean a thing.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Wake most certainly has a cupcake schedule in 2021 and they will go on to face South Carolina Upstate, the Virginia Military Academy, and the Charlotte 49ers before they really kick into Conference play.
The Deacs jumped out to that 6 – 0 start and then the LSU Tigers brought that all to a crashing end. Wake has recovered with a win over Northwestern last time out but obviously the line setters see something wrong here.
A 10-point spread against you usually means the public see you as a struggling team looking to figure things out.
The Deacons are ranked 35th in the nation putting up 82 PPG, but again, that schedule better be producing those types of numbers.
It’s not tough to know where that production is coming from because this offense runs through 3 dudes. Alondes Williams is putting up 19.5 PPG and his 5.6 boards a night also lead this team. Jake LaRavia isn’t far behind Williams as he churns out 15.5 PPG while also grabbing 5.5 boards a night.
This team knows that rebounding can decide the outcome of games and everyone on this roster seems to get it.
Virginia Tech Hokies
The Hokies defense has been stellar to this point and the rankings certainly reveal why. Virginia Tech ranks 2nd in the nation allowing only 53.4 PPG and they also sit in the 3rd position against their opponents behind the arc.
Putting up the 3 is going well thus far as you see the Hokies ranked 18th in the land shooting 40.6% from distance.
The only two teams that have taken out the Hokies this season were both ranked in the top-25. First, the loss to Memphis came just after the Hokies program took their 1,500th win in their hoops history after getting past Merrimack, 72 – 43.
Then, the loss to Xavier was a game that this team could have easily won as a 59 – 58 final gave the Musketeers the win on a late 3.
So, the Hokies drew Maryland in the Big Ten / ACC Challenge, and guess who got to write that game up right here at CP? Oh, so you did enjoy the Hokies play I gave you? Good!
This is not quite the same situation though, because laying double-digits is not in my DNA. I just don’t know how to do it so I hope these two give us a close game.
Keve Aluma Justyn Mutts seem to always be around the glass as they are 1-2 on this team in rebounding. Mutts is on the same pace he was at a year ago scoring but the dude can’t make a damn free-throw to save his life!

As I said, I can’t do it! I do actually expect this to be a tightly contested match and when I get double-digits I either think dog or leave the game alone.
