The Virginia Cavaliers will travel south to Chapel Hill and take on the North Carolina Tar Heels this Saturday.
HISTORY: Though these schools have one of the oldest rivalries in college football history, they’ve only met 40 times on the court. The series is deadlocked 20-20, but UVA has quietly won the last seven meetings.
UNC will be favored to win at home here.
UVA opened conference play with a loss, but they’ve responded with tough road wins over Syracuse and Clemson. The Wahoos are currently 3-2 as visitors this season.
The Cavs have been powered by transfer portal signees Jayden Gardner and Armaan Franklin. Gardner has transferred in from ECU and has asserted himself as a force down low, leading the team with 15.4 ppg and 7.6 rpg.
Franklin, an Indiana transfer, paced the team with 23 points on 8-16 shooting against Georgia and he’s second on the team in scoring (12.1). He’s joined by veteran point guard Kihei Clark, who’s averaging 9.9 ppg and 4.2 apg.
Sophomores Reece Beekman and Kadin Shedrick join them in the starting lineup, with the former leading the team in assists (4.4).
North Carolina Tar Heels
Syracuse returned to play with a win over Brown Monday, 93-62. The Orange have returned mixed results from non-conference play, but they could finish things up strong here with a win over their local rival.
Armando Bacot has enjoyed a great junior season thus far. The 6’10 senior has double-doubled in his last five games, and he grabbed a career-high 17 boards in the loss to Notre Dame. Bacot leads the Tar Heels in scoring (15.7) and rebounding (10.4).
Caleb Love looks like the next great UNC guard. The 6’2 sophomore scored 22 points in win over Michigan, and he’s second on the team in scoring (15.6) and assists (3.3). RJ Davis has also taken a second year leap in the UNC backcourt, scoring 13.7 ppg and leading UNC with 3.6 apg.
UNC struck gold with Dawson Garcia and Brady Manek in the transfer portal. They’ve come in and solidified the starting five, both averaging double figures and grabbing six boards per game.
Senior guard Leaky Black’s impact goes beyond the score board, and he’s one of the best role players in the country.
CBB Betting Trends:
- UNC is 6-4 ATS in their last 10 games against UVA.
- Under is 11-2 in UVA’s last 13 games.
- Under is 6-1 in Cavs last 7 games vs. a team with a record above .500.
Free Virginia Cavaliers vs. UNC Tar Heels NCAAB Prediction: UNC to Win
Virginia has swept North Carolina three years in a row but that stretch of dominance could come to a close here.
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: UNC ML
When UVA hasn’t been able to play at their methodical pace, things haven’t fared well for Tony Bennett’s squad. UNC should feed off returning to Chapel Hill and playing in front of their fans for the first time this year, and they should overpower an offensively challenged UVA team.
Take UNC’s moneyline for this ACC heavyweight battle.
