We like to call this big-boy basketball! Nova and the Bears take it to the Ferrell Center court to decide a battle between two teams ranked inside the top-6 in the nation when they square off on Sunday in Waco.
With the Boilermakers leaving the ranks of the undefeated this past week, the Baylor Bears are eyeing their opportunity to claim the #1 spot in the land with a big home win against a premier college hoops program in the nation. Purdue just gained their top-ranked status for the first week in program history and a Baylor win would likely propel the Bears to #1 in the land.
By the same token, Villanova is still ranked 6th in the country despite having picked up 2 early losses in 2021. Oh, it’s understandable since UCLA and that Boilermaker squad account for those two defeats, and the pollsters certainly respect those efforts, albeit losses.
The Wildcats are certainly a team that everyone has circled on their schedule because they will be getting everyone’s best game again this year. When you play Nova you are playing the best and if you want to beat the best you better play your fucking ass off and then some!
This game is hopefully, going to be a classic because neither wants to start seeing anything with an L on the calendar going forward.
Villanova Wildcats
As I said, when your only two losses are to programs that are likely headed for another deep run in the tourney this year, hiccups against UCLA and Purdue leave not a lick of shame to hang your head over. By the same token, this could simply end up being another loss against a top-5 program in the nation should Nova fall to 7 – 3.
Sure, we are still talking about 3 losses but I am pretty sure that Jay Wright is going to be one fired-up dude all night long again. Is it me or does he seem a little more emotionally invested this year? I think I saw one of his eyes pop out in the loss to Purdue and Wright knows that these are some heavy games to be playing so early in the campaign.
How many teams have faced just about every top-5 program before the end of December? We know that there are still some big programs stuck in cupcake city trying to produce simple wins.
Nova? Ain’t one of those teams and Jay Wright wants his team in the spotlight and he expects them to live up to his expectation.
I will go on a limb and say that now that he is a Hall of Famer, he seems to want to win every game to add to a legacy that he already has in place. Hey, this dude lost his sister in one helluva tough way and all of the old-schoolers have been watching this dude win for how long now?
So, playing for Jay Wright is a different animal, and oh yeah, who was it that beat Nova in last year’s Sweet 16? Hmm, well well, hello Baylor! Revenge has almost got to be the word no one wants to say but everyone wants to exact on Baylor. When you get to face the team that is responsible for ending your run a year ago in the big dance and they are undefeated to boot?
Hmm hmm, Nova getting the 4.5 points is going to be tough for me not to take notice.
Baylor Bears
Baylor’s schedule this year really isn’t filled with challenges outside of the win over Michigan State in 2021. This will certainly be a big test for the fact that Baylor is still undefeated and Nova wants that revenge I spoke of too.
So, keeping Nova’s adrenalin down has got to be a key to slowing down the Wildcats because this team is putting the ball in the basket early and often thus far.
Baylor is doing it on both sides of the floor and we expect that from them now. The Bears are ranked 12th in the nation scoring 84 points a night and on the other side of the floor Baylor is holding their opponents to an average of 56.4 PPG, good for a top-10 ranking in the land.
I think the 21 steals against the Chippewas still stick in my head because of that kind of effort just being aware and keeping your hands and heads up.
I still question the depth of this team a little bit, just from the eye test and then knowing that Cryer is leading this team in scoring. Cryer has been coming off the bench at the first sign of trouble for a guard-heavy offense, but yet he is the one putting up over 15 points a night?
I think Jay Wright is going to throw all the healthy bodies he has at Baylor hoping to land a couple of Bears in foul trouble early.
