CBB Betting Total:
Vanderbilt and Texas A&M will square off Wednesday in the opening round of the SEC Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. The Commodores and Aggies are the 12 and 13 seeds, respectively.
Vanderbilt Commodores
Vanderbilt has had another disappointing season under second-year head coach Jerry Stackhouse. On the bright side, they aren’t losing every game in conference play like they did two seasons ago. The Commodores have still lost 12 of their last 15 games.
Vanderbilt is 3-13 in conference play following a 56-46 loss to Ole Miss to end the regular season. The Commodores are are averaging 72.2 points on 43.0 percent shooting and allowing 73.5 points on 46.2 percent shooting.
Vanderbilt always seems to have one or two great prospects despite their losing records. That has proven to be the case again this year with point guard Scotty Pippen Jr. The sophomore point guard averages just over 20 points a game and does a good job dishing the ball. Dylan Disu averages 15 points a night as well.
The Commodores main issue is that they lack any kind of presence on the interior. They are 346th in block percentage and 289th in opponents 2-point percentage nationally. Vanderbilt often plays high-scoring games and is largely dependent on the 3-pointer.
The Commodores are 64th in the country in offensive efficiency.
Texas A&M Aggies
Due to a coronavirus outbreak, Buzz Williams’ squad enters the SEC Tournament having played just two games since the start of February. The Aggies enter Wednesday’s matchup slotted at No. 129 in the latest KenPom rankings after finishing the conference season with a 2-8 record. The Aggies have played just 10 conference games this year
The Aggies have had a tough time putting the ball in the basket, especially in SEC play. In conference play, the Aggies are scoring a league-worst 90.9 points per 100 possessions (14th in the SEC). The Aggies have shot a league-low 28.0 percent from 3-point range and also sport the worst effective field goal percentage in the conference at 44.8 percent.
On defense, things have only slightly been better. Texas A&M has allowed 97.7 points per 100 possessions for the year (93rd in the NCAA) and 107.8 points per 100 possessions versus SEC opponents (12th in the SEC). The Aggies rely on generating turnovers (fifth in the SEC) to get stops but they’ve allowed teams to shoot a league-high 57.4 percent from 2-point range during SEC play.
