Dickies Arena will play host to the Simmons Bank Showdown on Wednesday night as two old foes revive a rivalry.
Utah and TCU were both members of the Mountain West Conference for years and oh, do I remember it well. Being this 52-year old from New York who went to graduate college in Montana after my time at UConn, I was in Mountain West country from 1989 to 1994 and again from 2004 to 2009, sort of. Wyoming and TCU and BYU and Utah and oh, I don’t even need to look up any of that to recall those days.
It isn’t the Big Sky stuff that I lived around, but make no mistake that Idaho’s and Montana’s of the world know a thing about competing against those old Mountain West characters and they still do to this day.
Anyway, it has been about 10 years since we have seen these two on the same court and I think it is great! The last time these two met Utah took a low-scoring 50 – 48 win against the Horned Frogs but that is all old history now.
The Utah Utes picked up the pieces from their recent 2-game skid and came away with a win over Cal last time out, 66 – 58. The hot 5 – 0 start got put in the rear-view mirror all quicklike when BYU had to be the team that left them with the first loss of 2021 back on November 27.
TCU got off to a 3 – 0 start and then got whacked by a pretty damn good Santa Clara team, 85 – 66. Since then, the Frogs have regained their 3-game win streak entering tonight’s battle with an old foe.
Utah Utes
Utah is a little banged up as they hit the road for Fort Worth to compete in this year’s Simmons Bank Showdown.
Marco Anthony has sat out of the last 3 games and I don’t expect we will be seeing tonight nor the Manhattan game on deck either. That ankle is sprained good and he might need this week to really recover instead of pushing him too early.
Anthony was putting in 25 minutes a night although he wasn’t producing a ton of points he was pulling in about 9 boards a night. Coaches love those guys!
Speaking of knowing the area, Coach Smith knows that region as well as anyone from his travels leading programs all around the Rocky Mountains. This dude has even seen the heartland of North Dakota down to Fort Collins and he came from Utah State just in March of this year.
I am sorry but I know this guy so well it is stupid and it is simply by default because of the programs he has led. Coach is a North Dakota native with quite a background that has earned him a winning reputation.
His last 3 years at Utah State were outstanding even if it didn’t amount to a win in the NCAA Tournament while he was there. The coach was 74 – 24 in 3 20+-win campaigns for the Aggies and then the offer came to head a Pac 12 outfit and the choice was easy to make. Hi, PAID!
Brandon Carlson may be officially leading this team in scoring, but that could change any night of the week. Carlson is putting up 13.5 PPG but two of his teammates are also averaging 13 points a contest.
David Jenkins Jr. and Both Gach are putting up 13.1 and 13.0 points per game respectively and Rollie Worster is another guy who puts in the most minutes a night.
TCU Horned Frogs
Speaking of some knowledge of the old WAC and Mountain West stuff, Jamie Dixon was an assistant at Hawaii long before he became this big name in college hoops. His time at Pitt was outstanding and he was there when the Panthers were still a Big East program.
The Zoo is always going to be a thing at TCU and they will probably have a good chunk of home support from the Fort Worth allegiance tonight.
Dixon needs a big season after two tough years with TCU, and the 12 – 14 record from last year simply cannot happen again. When he first got here in 2016 he led the Frogs to 3-straight 20+-win campaigns and the last two have not gone to plan.
TCU was 16 – 16 and likely weren’t going to be invited to a post-season tournament in 2020 even with the cancellation of it all, but the 5 – 11 in conference play record last year has to be corrected this season.
So far, so good, and 6 – 1 looks good on paper so the obvious goal is to keep this program headed in the winning direction they are currently moving.
The schedule has been a little forgiving, however, so this team will really have to start proving itself as conference play draws near in January.
Mike Miles is doing all he can to provide a nightly lift just as he did a season ago for Jamie Dixon. Miles is averaging 15.6 points a night although he needs to slow the game down a little bit more to become that complete guard. Now that he is seeing the ball a lot more, he is turning over the ball a little too much although he is finding open guys too.
Emanuel Miller is the only other Frog averaging double-digits this season and those 7.6 boards a night come in handy as well.
