Texas Tech isn’t as big of a favorite as you’d think they would be heading into their tournament opener with Utah State. The Red Raiders are just -5, despite being battle tested in the Big 12 this season.
Can Utah State get hot and pull this thing out? The Aggies are a 20-win team that got an at-large bid despite losing in the MWC conference tourney finals to San Diego State.
Utah State Aggies
Utah State is a streaky team, posting 11 straight wins at one point in the season and rattling off six straight including the tournament before dropping the championship game to the Aztecs.
The Aggies have played a couple tournament teams besides their conference foe SDSU, but it’s been awhile. USU lost 69-85 to VCU way back in the season opener and also fell 64-67 to BYU in the fourth game of the year.
Despite the 95th ranked strength of schedule this year (Texas Tech, 16th) Utah State is a trendy upset pick. They’ve got a dominant force on the inside in 7-footer Neemias Queta, who averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds in the MWC tournament.
Texas Tech’s top four scorers are guards, so they may have a tough time matching up with Queta. Justin Bean has some good size as a 6’7″ guard for Utah State as well, and Marco Anthony had 15 points and 13 rebounds from the guard spot in the regular season finale.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
On paper it looks like Texas Tech is in a bit of a pickle for Friday’s game in Bloomington. Will the advantage of playing in the Big 12, where 7 teams made the tournament, give TTU the edge?
Texas Tech didn’t have the Big 12 tournament showing that they would’ve liked, falling 67-66 to #9 Texas even as -1.5 favorites. The Red Raiders also beat Texas at the end of February, 68-59.
TTU is a weird team that could either lose in the first round, or get hot and make it to the Sweet 16 or higher. Mac McClung leads the Red Raiders with over 16 ppg, and Terrence Shannon, Jr. (12.5) has big game potential as well.
Chris Beard also knows how to coach this time of year. Beard took Texas Tech to the Elite 8 in his 2nd year at the helm in 2018, and followed that up with a national runner-up losing to Virginia in the championship game. Last year’s tournament was of course cancelled.

Free Utah State Aggies vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders NCAAB Prediction:
Utah State really doesn’t have a signature win aside from taking 2 of 3 from fellow tournament team San Diego State. Texas Tech has wins over Texas, Oklahoma, and LSU – all who have made the Big Dance.
That doesn’t mean Utah State doesn’t provide some matchup problems though. The spread being just -4 points says that on it’s own. With the neutral site, it’s easy to like the Aggies here.
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: Utah State +4
The size of Queta may be too much for the Red Raiders, who basically start four guards as well as 6’7″ forward Marcus Santos-Silva
