One of the twelve automatic tickets to the NCAA tournament to be punched on Saturday when the Utah State Aggies take on the San Diego State Aztecs from the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Utah State outmuscled Colorado State 62-50 in a rock fight to advance to the Championship game, while the Aztecs controlled the entirety of the semifinal game against Nevada and came out on top 77-70.
The Aggies swept the two-game series with the Aztecs from earlier in the season, we will see if the Aztecs can get revenge and have enough in the tank to get the job done with three games in three days.
Utah State Aggies
In their semifinals’ game, Utah State beat Colorado State 62-50 where they played excellent defensively. They held the Rams to a trifling field goal percentage of 25.4% and a three-point percentage of 15.8%. The defense was much needed, as the Aggies only shot 36.1% from the field and 25% (7-25) beyond the three-point range.
Three starters for the Aggies went for double figures led by big man Neemias Queta, who went 6-14 from the floor and almost grabbed a terrible double going for 18 points, 14 rebounds, and a whopping nine blocks. Queta leads the team in scoring with 15.0 points per game and is the 16th leading rebounder in the country with 10.8 boards per game.
As a team, Utah State averages 73.89 points per game which is ranked 107th in the country amongst D-1 teams. They are shooting 44.88% from the field and 33.84% from beyond the arc.
Defensively, the Aggies are a very sound team. They surrender just 62.04 points per game which is 14th in the nation. Opponents are shooting 38.68% from the floor and 33.65% from past the three-point line. Utah State holds the 8th best defensive efficiency in the country according to KenPom.com.
San Diego State Aztecs
SDSU played solid defense in their 77-70 win over Nevada in the semis but failed to cover the spread for the fourth game in a row. They won by seven points even though they held the Wolfpack to 35.8% shooting while they shot 45.3% and also shot the 3-pointer much better. The problem for the Aztecs was foul trouble as they allowed the Wolfpack to get to the line 34 times in the win.
Over 38% of Nevada’s points were earned at the charity stripe and now they are going against the best FT shooting team in the conference.
Forward Matt Mitchell leads SDSU in scoring with 15.4 points per game and he only had eight points on 25% shooting in the quarterfinals win against Wyoming before going for 24 points on 40% shooting in the semis win against Nevada. The Aztecs will need him to the bulk of the scoring with the Aggie’s weakness coming on the wing.
On defense, the Aztecs are one of the top 10 teams in the country. They allow opponents to score just 60.69 points per game while shooting 38.74% from the field which is the eighth-best mark in all of college basketball.

Free Utah State Aggies vs. San Diego State Aztecs NCAAB Prediction:
The saying it’s hard to beat a team three times in one season isn’t necessarily the same when it comes to basketball, unlike football. We actually see the team that won the first two matchups win the third matchup 72.6% of the time when it comes to college basketball and that is because the team that won the first two games is usually just the much better team.
That’s why I’m going to lean with the Utah State Aggies in this game. San Diego State doesn’t have the size down low to combat Queta’s post-play and that was the issue in the first two games. Queta has such a size advantage down low that the Aggies outrebounded the Aztecs (who are a top 50 rebounding team in the country) 72-58 through the first two games.
If the Aztecs can’t get to the boards in this game I don’t think they have the shooters like years past to bail them out. Give me Utah State to sweep the season series with Aztecs and punch their ticket to the Big Dance.
