The Memphis look to continue their hot streak Monday when they play host to the struggling UCF Knights in Memphis.
Memphis Tigers
The Memphis Tigers have been playing well to the under in the last two years, and they are a very similar team to last season. The Tigers were a mediocre offensive squad that ranked in the top-10 in defensive efficiency last year, and that’s exactly what they’ve been in 2020–21.
Memphis is third in Division I in defensive rating but has surpassed the 110 offensive rating in just two of 15 games this year.
It seems like despite the talent they have brought in, the Tigers just haven’t quite been able to hit their stride under Penny Hardaway. They are 5-3 in conference play, and have managed to turn things around from an ATS standpoint. After starting the season 2-9 ATS, Memphis has covered in each of its last four games.
The lack of shooting from last year has started to improve. The Tigers are hitting 35.4 percent of their long-range attempts, and have hit 41 attempts from deep in their last four games. The addition of Landers Nolley II and DeAndre Williams have played a big factor in that improvement, and the progression of Lester Quinones and Boogie Ellis have helped.
Memphis allows opponents to shoot under 30 percent from deep and also has the fourth highest block rate in the country thanks to Moussa Cisse.
UCF Knights
After starting the season 3-1 with a win over Florida State, UCF has been reeling. The Knights are just 2-6 in conference after an overtime loss to Wichita State.
This has been a different UCF team than in year’s past. While they are still playing slow like a typical Johnny Dawkins team, they lack a true frontcourt presence and instead have found a star guard to lead the way.
Brandon Mahan has been shooting the lights out through six games and has taken a big stride from year one to two as a Knight. He is currently 20-42 from deep and averages a team-leading 14.6 points a contest. Darin Green Jr. has also chipped in just under 12.5 points per game to give the Knights a formidable backcourt.
Unfortunately for UCF, C.J. Walker has not panned out as well as anticipated in the frontcourt. The former five-star prospect was expected to make a leap after a disappointing freshman campaign at Oregon, but has struggled to find his footing and averages just 5.5 points per game.
Betting Trends:
- Tigers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
- Tigers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400.
- Knights are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 Monday games.
Free Memphis Tigers vs. UCF Knights NCAAB Prediction:
Memphis has improved of late, but I still like the Knights to cover and feel the Tigers are getting too many points.
