Expect a big crowd gathering today for this rivalry game but it might not be what you had in mind. If you recall, when the tickets came out for this affair in Austin the Red Raider faithful cracked the code to give out tickets to the Texas Tech fans instead.
There will be redder in the crowd than burnt orange and this series has really taken a step up since the Chris Beard departure to the Longhorns from Tech after last season. In the first meeting between these two teams at Lubbock, Beard was a deer in the headlights hoping to not even be seen on the sidelines for that meeting back on what is no enemy soil.
Beard left plenty of pieces in place for Mark Adams who has seamlessly carried his inherited program to a winning season in his first year as the head man in Lubbock. Emotions will be high for this second meeting between what will be a lively crowd in Austin this afternoon.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
Even the OU fans are enjoying calling out Beard, and did you see the article on the Hook Em Horns page? Sooner fans were giving it to Beard all game calling him a traitor and a sellout and although it didn’t turn in too much it was fun to watch. Rivalries like these are Awesome with a capital a, baby!
The Red Raider fans will be invading the Erwin Center tonight, make no mistake about it, so when you see all the red and black around the court don’t be shocked. Having the tickets in hand when they should be back in Lubbock is going to make this a messy rivalry. Something tells me there might be a tussle or two in the crowd or after the game tonight, just sayin’.
Oh, there’s a game too, so this is Head Coach Mark Adams’s chance to take his program into what is still considered hostile territory looking for the season sweep of the Horns. The Red Raiders have taken victories in 5 of their last 6 outings and the second win in that run was a 77 – 64 win over these Horns in Lubbock. On top of that, Tech is coming off a sweep of Baylor last time out as they earned an 83 – 73 win over the Bears on Wednesday night.
How about the Big 12 standings? Tech is right in the mix for the top seed headed to the conference tourney and a 5 – 0 finish to the regular season could surely give them a great chance to take that spot. Imagine? All the hype around Kansas and Baylor this season and the Red Raiders went on the be the 1-seed in the Big 12 Conference Tournament?
Tech is an equal 9 – 4 in Big 12 play with Baylor but the season sweep gives them the edge should they stay deadlocked when the final game of the regular season is played. The Bears and Tech are both chasing 10 – 2 Kansas who hold the cards should they run out the table.
Texas Longhorns
The Longhorns are 8 – 5 in Big 12 play and that’s a game behind both Tech and Baylor in the 4th spot of the standings. With a win tonight over Tech, it then becomes time to peruse the Texas schedule to close out the regular season because it’s going to be a tough run of games down the stretch.
The Horns will host TCU next and they will then make the trip to Morgantown to face the West Virginia Mountaineers. Baylor will play Texas on this floor and then a trip to Lawrence to face Kansas will be how this Texas program closes out the regular season and this game will be mentally testing as well.
The Beard revenge influence is really on the Tech side because the former Tech man inherited a lot of decent players over here in Austin to start his tenure with Texas. In case you hadn’t noticed, Texas has 11 juniors and seniors on this roster who were here when he took over.
In the win over Oklahoma last time out, it was a close game throughout and overtime was needed to decide the winner. Timmy Allen and Andrew Jones each came away with 20 points in the win for the Horns and Coach Beard got an earful from the OU crowd the entire game. Marcus Carr added 16 points to boost his average on the year to 11.1 PPG although the bench didn’t provide much of a spark. Only 7 points were found from the subs and Jones was the only player to make a 3-point shot for Texas.
Texas was 4 for 11 from behind the arc and Jones made all 4 of those shots while O/U was a dismal 5 for 23 from distance as well.

Free Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Texas Longhorns NCAAB Betting Prediction:
Emotions can influence a lot of things to happen that could usually go in other directions. The first meeting with these two programs showed that Tech could handle the pressure and now I actually see +4 at many sites carrying the early lines. I would gladly recommend the +4 even if it is -120 for the line. They could surely win outright again so thinking dog is never a bad thing in my house.
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: Red Raiders +4 -120
