Welcome to the Big Apple. I am Ej, and you are now in my neck of the woods in the Empire State for the Jimmy V Classic. Madison Square Garden is the place and 4 teams will once again be participating in this year’s big event.
We all know how important the Jimmy V Foundation has become since we lost Jim Valvano, and all of us hope we one day see total victory over Cancer! “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.”
Villanova and Syracuse will be joining this duo at the Classic this year and that makes for a nice evening of festivities on Tuesday night. This tip will be at 7 p.m ET and the second game will jump half an hour after this first game is concluded.
The Red Raiders were just here in 2019 for their first showing at the Classic as they went on to take a win over Louisville, 70 – 57.
The Vols’ first and only appearance in this event came back in 2000 when they lost a high-scoring affair against Virginia, 107 – 89.
If you recall, last year’s cancelation of the event in New York led to the Classic being held at the old Conseco Fieldhouse (Or, yeah, they have changed that name again and it will be different in 5 years… Again)
Gonzaga and Baylor were both involved with last year’s edition and we know how far they both went in the big dance a season ago.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
It has been a while since the Red Raiders have been to the Garden for the Jimmy-V Classic and this 6 – 1 program has gotten off to a fantastic start in 2021.
It goes without saying that Rick Barnes will be hoping for a different outcome than the 2000 version and this team will be ready to go on Tuesday night after picking up loss #1 of the season last time out. Providence handed the Red Raiders their first defeat as part of the Big East / Big 12 Battle.
Can we be honest here? Wait, do you know me? LoL
Let’s talk a bit about this schedule thus far for the Red Raiders, shall we?
First, it was the cupcake! Then, it was the next cupcake, and then, and then, and then we are full from all of the cupcakes that we just devoured. That 6 – 0 start to the season looks great until you really look over the body of work here.
Not amazingly to me, the first good team that this program ran into gave them all they could handle and then some as Providence is now 7 – 1 after their convincing win over rival Rhode Island last time out.
Terrence Shannon Jr. now has 4 games under his belt from sitting out the early season due to all of that NBA Draft stuff and he obviously worked on his game in the off-season after opting out of going pro. Shannon was putting up just under 13 points and 4 boards and I too think he made the right choice to come back another year.
Shannon is averaging close to 17 PPG this year and you can that he has improved in every category except the glass. Shannon led the Red Raiders with 17 points in the loss to Providence last time out and foul trouble was an issue most of the night.
There was an APB sent out for Bryson Williams after that game. Williams was leading the team in scoring but fell all the way back to third on the roster after the 4 points from 1 – 9 shooting in the loss to the Friars.
Tennessee Volunteers
Let’s assume that when the Volunteers got notified of the 4 teams competing in this year’s classic that they were likely happy to not draw Villanova. Those Cats are responsible for the Vols only loss this year at the Hall of Fame Tip-Off semifinals and it was a definite thumping, 53 – 71.
By the same token, all 4 of these programs have come out of the gate looking good so this should be one good night of hoops here in New York on Tuesday night.
The loss to Nova was a bit of a surprise simply because this team was only a 2-point underdog and they just never got in any kind of groove. The Vols have rebounded well from that defeat riding a 4-game win streak which included a nice win over the Tarheels that followed up the loss to Nova.
With the Red Raiders being the best defensive rebounding team in the nation, the Vols had better plan on putting players under the hoop or else they might not be seeing many second shot attempts tonight.
Kennedy Chandler and Santiago Vescovi are leading the way for this team thus far as they both average double-digits and they both see the most minutes on the floor for Coach Barnes.
You know, it is strange to see this Vols team ranked 59th in the country only making 75.3% of their free throws because this team is rather solid in that department. Their top-8 players are all shooting lights out from the charity stripe so that number is a bit deceiving.
CBB Betting Trends:
- Red Raiders are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 neutral site games.
- Red Raiders are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 Tuesday games.
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of Texas Tech’s last 7 games.
- Tennessee is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against an opponent in the Big 12 conference.
- Tennessee is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games when listed as favorites.
Free Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Tennessee Volunteers NCAAB Betting Prediction:
I have the Vols to cover that 2.5 points but it won’t be so easy. Tech wants to try to get back on track after picking up their first loss of 2021 but the Vols bench and power ranking have me wearing Orange and White on Tuesday. I like that total to pop over that number too!
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: Vols -2.5
