A pair of programs who are among the best in the Big 12 Conference square off at Allen Fieldhouse on Big Monday! I hope you are ready for another fantastic game as these two teams are carrying momentum into this highly anticipated tilt in Lawrence, Kansas.
The Red Raiders are coming off an impressive performance at home after taking out West Virginia on Saturday by 13 points. I assume you read my preview for that game and since I predicted a 15-point home win with the over cruising in you cashed a pair of tickets on the game?
Good, I enjoy that walk to the window as much as you do! So, the line setters are slapping a touchdown on the Jayhawks at home as they look to improve their home win streak to 19 games. Kansas is 9 – 0 at Allen Fieldhouse this season and they won their final 9 regular-season games of last year’s campaign putting their run of wins to 18 straight on this court.
Oh, and yes, I hope you listened to my Colorcast commentary for that Texas Tech West Virginia affair. And, guess what? We’re doing it again for this lovely contest so be sure to tune in and listen to Sam and I call this game. We snagged over 860 likes and tore it up, baby!
Texas Tech Red Raiders
What a performance it was for Terrence Shannon on Saturday as he came away with 23 points to lead the Red Raiders to a convincing 78 – 6 win over the Mountaineers. The game was really tight throughout, however, as it took a late run from the home team to eventually pull away from Huggins’ bunch.
Foul trouble plagued the Mountaineers all night long, as the Red Raiders were in the double bonus in the first half at the 11:28 mark, and getting to the line is something this team loves to do. Despite only making 25 of their 36 chances from the charity stripe and a 5 for 20 night shooting from distance, the Red Raiders still managed to find 78 points while improving to 12 – 0 at home.
Terry Shannon really needed to have a big game and he went out inspired while letting everyone know he is back! Shannon had only been back on the court for 2 games and he didn’t exactly get off to a good start in his return. With 5 fouls, 4 turnovers, and only 6 points against KSU and ISU, Shannon put the team on his back when they needed him because Dvion Warren and Kevin McCullar were only able to contribute 7 points apiece in the win.
If you look at the scoring depth chart now, Shannon took over the team lead in scoring with his 23 points against the Mountaineers bringing his average up to 12.8 PPG.
By the same token, the defensive numbers all went in the wrong direction as a result of the West Virginia game. This Tech program was in the top-10 in scoring defense and FG% but slid down to 13th and 12th respectively. Still, this team is trying to hang their hat on their defense.
After really seeing them with my own eyes and being a part of the telecast, I am not convinced that this defense is among the best in the nation and Kansas should have plenty of success finding points at home.
Kansas Jayhawks
Sure, Kansas already knows what it is like to get taken down by these Red Raiders, as a January 8th 75 – 67 result left the Jayhawks with their second loss of the season. Revenge is only a thing if you have the goods to reverse the fortune, and we are seeing this team constantly stuck in close games lately.
Outside of the 85 – 59 thrashing of those West Virginia Mountaineers, Kansas has won 3 of their last 4 games in this 40game win streak by 3 points or less. Kansas came away with a 62 – 61 win over Iowa State, a 67 – 64 win over OU, and last time out this Jayhawk team barely escaped with a win in their bout with Rival Kansas State.
The Wildcats came out guns-a-blazing against the Jayhawks on Saturday building a 50 – 34 halftime lead before what happened next. Whatever coach Self said in the locker room worked because the Jayhawks didn’t give the Wildcats any space and simply shut it down to come away with that win.
Regardless, close games and the Big 12 seem to be a thing with quality teams involved, as long as West Virginia isn’t on the court, LoL.
Even though DaJuan Harris is certainly worth watching, his game still needs some tweaking. This dude just doesn’t score enough for me to invest in the Jayhawks tonight. I know he can drop some dimes and keep everyone else involved, but I think he needs to learn when to be selfish and just take the shot sometimes. When you know he would rather distribute instead of score himself, that actually makes him easier to guard.
Agbaji is a stud and we all know this already. There are only so many dudes averaging over 20 points a game and he is one of them at 20.4 PPG. He was huge against the Wildcats in the comeback-winning effort putting up 29 points to boost that average of his.
Tonight? Sam and I are calling this game and this is going to be a thriller that both of us are going to love watching together. This game will come down to the wire and we are thinking dog again, baby!

If the line setters want to give me 7 points then who the hell am I to argue with them? I just say thank you and holy shit, are we going to see some scoring happening. Ready for this? I foresee a 78 – 74 win for the Jayhawks in this spot and into the 150s we go!
