A pair of one-loss programs take the Big East Big 12 Battle to the next level on Thursday night at the Pru when Texas and Seton Hall take the court. Both teams are ranked in the top-25 and neither wants to start reversing their winning ways as we get closer to conference play at the end of the month.
The Longhorns pushed their win streak to 5 games with a convincing win over the UT-Rio Grand Vaqueros last time out, 88 – 58. That result, and that seemingly easy cover of the -25.5 line, didn’t appear like it would be so simple after a wild first-half performance from those Vaqueros in Austin.
Texas got back to what they do best and held the Vaqueros to 17 second-half points after surrendering 41 in the opening stanza.
Since losing to Ohio State at the Fort Myers Tip-Off, the Pirates have won 4 straight games which include their third-place finish win over Cal before returning home for the last 3 games. Seton Hall has enjoyed having their fans around them now taking a 5-game win streak at the Pru into tonight’s big matchup with the Horns.
The line setters seem to think Texas should be favored so are we going home dog or laying some chalk on Thursday night?
Texas Longhorns
The Hook ‘Em’ Horns have lost to Gonzaga this season and that’s not the worst thing to claim when you are 6 – 1 with a few games left before Big 12 Conference play arrives in January.
The pollsters have been impressed enough to put this Texas program at 7th in the nation even with one pretty weak schedule if we’re being honest here. All right, the Horns lost to Gonzaga but those 6 wins we see on that slate sure don’t scream to anyone that this is a top–10 teams in the nation.
Texas has been favored by no less than 21 points in any of these 6 wins and they have covered 4 of the 6 affairs.
I mentioned the first half last time out and Texas just didn’t seem in the mood to be their defensive-minded selves against those Vaqueros and it was only 46 – 41 as the halftime horn sounded. The Vaqueros basically played 6 dudes and they gave Texas all they could handle for 20 minutes.
Whatever coach Beard said to his players in the locker room certainly got everyone fired up to get back to defending and being who they think we are… a defensive team that ranks 5th in the nation only allowing 55.3 PPG. After allowing 41 you see that final score of 58 for the Vaqueros because Texas can shut you down whenever they feel like it.
Seton Hall Pirates
So, when you come out the way Texas did last time out we can assume the Pirates are well aware of how that game turned out. Seton Hall had better be ready for a defensive game because I don’t think the Horns are going to come out flat again on Thursday night.
The Pirates are okay with that, however, as you see this Hall program only allows teams to shoot 27.1% from behind the arc ranking them 30th in the country.
That will come in handy because Texas can shoot their asses off from anywhere on the court on top of being a great defensive team. The Pirates will be preparing for a team that almost shoots 50% from the floor as a team (Ranked 15th in that cat)
Can we really even talk about what the Hall did to Nyack last time out? Nah, let’s not because I think 3 cheerleaders also added 14 points to lead the way for the Pirates to a 113 – 67 win.
Outside of that, this program already has that signature win when they took down mighty Meeechigan early in the year and their only loss is by 3 to a rather decent Ohio State team.
Jared Rhoden is a stud among men and those 17 points a night don’t even start to talk about his leadership this year. Well, he is a native New Yorker so I get why he is killing it. No, I am not biased at all, not me, LoL
When #14 feels like taking over a game, he takes over a game and puts this squad on his back for spells at a time. We all know that when someone is feeling it you just feed Seymour to avoid the Little Shop of Horrors!
Rhoden gets to the line and when he gets there he knows what to do. He was 23 of 28 at the Fort Myers Classic from the charity stripe and he’s been perfect from the line in 4 games this year.
CBB Betting Trends:
- Pirates are 25-8 ATS in their last 33 Thursday games.
- Pirates are 49-24 ATS in their last 73 games as an underdog.
- Pirates are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
- Over is 8-3-1 in Pirates’ last 12 games as a home underdog.
Free Texas Longhorns vs. Seton Hall Pirates NCAAB Betting Prediction:
I could go on about the depth for Seton Hall too and we know they can both defend and they can both shoot lights out at times too.
I have the Hall and if thinking dog is wrong I don’t want to be right, baby!
