The Alabama Crimson Tide are expected to cruise to their 20th win of the season according to the line setters, as they issue a -9.5 opening line on the home team in Tuscaloosa on Wednesday night.
The Aggies have won 3 of their last 4 games after shaking off a lengthy 8-game losing skid, so there is a bit of confidence for Buzz Williams’ bunch. After a dismal 8 – 10 2020-21 campaign, Williams has gotten back on the winning side of the standings and with a win tonight and a victory in the final game of the regular season against Miss State, this could be a 20-win campaign.
The Tide are going to do all they can to stop the first part of that scenario from happening and favored by nearly double-digits there is even more expectation on Alabama tonight. The Crimson Tide has won 5 of their last 6 games with the loss coming against Kentucky during this run of positive results. Ironically, the best position the Tide can land for the SEC tourney is the 5-seed, which doesn’t actually bode well in the long run because they’ll bump into the top-seed sooner than later.
Texas A&M Aggies
The season is certainly not a wash for this team and to even be in a position to reach 20-wins is still quite an accomplishment. The top of the SEC is full of decent programs and the 7 – 9 conference record could just as easily be 9 – 7 with a couple of bounces going their way this season.
The Aggies are likely headed for the 10-seed in the SEC tourney, although a 2 – 0 finish could push them up a few spots down the stretch. I don’t think anyone really will see much of a difference in where they land once the event gets underway because it is just a matter of surviving and moving on from there.
The Aggies did pick up a nice win over Florida to start this run of 3 of 4 victories and a win over Georgia and Ole Miss was to be expected. Obviously, Ole Miss and Georgia and certainly bottom-feeders of the SEC this season although the loss to Vandy is one against a team struggling too so that might have come as a surprise.
Getting to 20 wins is not going to be easy and Quenton Jackson will have to be a big contributor to lifting this program down the stretch. Jackson has been a double-digit scorer in his last 11 games and he is up to 14 PPG leading this program in scoring. Expect #3 to be standing on the free-throw line adding points to his ledger because the dude just knows how to get to the line.
Alabama Crimson Tide
How hard do you really want to fight for a 5-seed in the SEC tourney? That is the question because Alabama can do no better with only 2 games left to play in the regular season, The Tide will make a trip to the Bayou to face LSU, and then it is time for the March Madness to really kick into gear. We already have plenty of conference tournaments underway, but the SEC tournament will basically be a 4-man right IMO.
No matter if Alabama does clinch this 5-seed it will only end their season that much quicker because they will bump into the SEC leader in the semi’s while still having to get past the 4-seed in the QFs. That could end up being Tennessee or Arkansas or even still Kentucky with those 3 teams locked at 12 – 4 with two games to play. The ending to the SEC regular season will be exciting because of all the movement that we could possibly see inside the top-4 and from the 5th spot down the board.
The Tide is coming into this game with 90-point momentum from their convincing win over the Gamecocks last time out. Tonight will be the final home game at Coleman so we can certainly expect them to be in full-throat to send the Tide off in good spirits.
What the 90 – 71 win did for Alabama was to get everyone some playing time on the court. Coach Oats cleared the bench and I think he let 4 people from the crowd just jump in to get some face time. Obviously, we all know that Alabama goes 3-4 deep like everyone else in the country, but I thought it was cool to see all 15 players see a minute or two before the conference tourney gets here.
Jaden Shackelford came off the pine and contributed 21 points but we all expect the Tide’s leading scorer to do that night after night. Shackelford is averaging 17 PPG leading the Alabama program in scoring and he was one of 3 players to come in the game to find double-digits. JD Davison and Charles Bediako contributed 10 & 11 points respectively while Jahvon Quinerly went off from distance. Quinerly came away with 20 points burning 4 of his attempts from behind the arc while dropping off 5 dimes to his teammates along the way.
Coach Oats has faith that his kids will kick it into gear knowing what it took to reach the Sweet 16 just a season ago.

I am sorry but 9.5 points are too many for me to just watch go by. Alabama may be expected to cruise to a comfy win but if it was that easy? Hmm hmm, right. Aggies +9.5 it is.
