The Utah State Aggies will be looking to improve on their 2 – 1 home record when they play host to the St. Mary’s Gaels on Thursday night. The line setters have set the Aggies as the early-line favorites as they have been impressive out of the gate with a Myrtle Beach trophy already in the showcase.
After the opening night loss to UC-Davis, the Aggies have reeled off 6 consecutive wins which include that 4 – 0 trip to South Carolina.
The Gaels are playing their first official road game of 2021 having played 4 games in their own house and 3 games in Hawaii at the Maui Invitational. St. Mary’s advanced to the finals where they lost to Wisconsin but the Gaels rebounded from that road trip with a nice win last time out against UC-Irvine back at home, 67- 50.
St. Mary’s Gaels
The Gaels hit the road for 2 games against Mountain West Conference opponents as they will head on to Fort Collins to face Colorado State after this affair in Logan. They will get a week off to prepare for a meeting with UCSB on the 11th and will get another week off afterward.
So, this team will be well-rested and looking to improve on the 7 – 1 start to the 2021 campaign. Head Coach Randy Bennett has only been manning the Gael sideline for 20 years and he is coming off one of his worst seasons since the 2006-07 campaign.
Only, right, LoL. Coach Bennett and Mark Few have basically set the standard in the West Coast Conference and we expect more of the same to transpire in 2021-22.
The finals showing in Maui may have ended with a defeat in the title game to Wisconsin, but Coach Bennett will certainly know how to spin that into the positives to take from the trip.
The Gaels have definitely relied on their defense to get to 7 – 1 having hit the under 6 times from the 8 games played. St. Mary’s ranks 23rd in the nation allowing only 57.8% points a contest and they’ve covered the boards nicely ranking 25th in the land pulling in just about 27 defensive rebounds a night.
Alex Ducas just needs to have a double-digit night to join four other players who are already there. Dan Fotu has only been on the court for 176 minutes this season and he is 8 of 16 from distance and leading this team in scoring.
Turnovers!! This team better learn how to keep their hands on the ball because we are seeing far too many turnovers from every player on this squad.
Utah State Aggies
The Aggies deserve to be favored and I hope all the old-schoolers out there pound St. Mary’s out of reputation alone. I can only envision the common bettor out there who would not really look into this game and think to themselves that St. Mary’s should not be losing to Utah State no matter what.
Yeah, that’s not happening tonight, kids, so let’s make sure you know better!
The Aggies are simply a good shooting team both from the floor and from the free-throw line. You see this program is ranked 20th from the line and ranked 28th from the floor making 49.2% of their shots.
Justin Bean is 5th in the nation scoring 22.6 points a night and his 58.8% from behind the arc puts him at 18th in the land from the 3-point line. Bean has taken the leadership role in his senior season and he obviously is a different player than he has been the last two years. Bean was averaging 11 PPG for the last two years and now he has doubled that production thus far.
We could basically sit here and talk about his big nights already this year but let’s spread the wealth a little.
Brandon Horvath is putting up 14 points a game and he is also shooting an outrageous 53.6% from behind the arc this year.
Now that Craig Smith bolted for rival Utah, Ryan Odom inherited a program that has put up 3 consecutive 20-win campaigns. Not bad for a dude that jumps from UMBC to a mid-major program. You may recall his history-making win in the 2018 NCAA Tournament when his 16-seeded UMBC team took out #1 Virginia opening weekend.
That feat has still only been done once and Odom was the coach who gets to live with that accomplishment until we see it happen again… Don’t hold your breath!
