The St. Mary’s Gaels will take the one-hour bus trip south and take on the Santa Clara Broncos this evening.
St. Mary’s is favored to win by three on the road here.
St. Mary’s Gaels
St. Mary’s has been on a tear since losing to BYU at the start of the calendar year. The Gaels have won seven in a row, and they now sit comfortably second in the West Coast Conference. St. Mary’s took care of Loyola Maramount last time out, 71-60.
Matthias Tias leads an experienced Gaels squad. The 6’10 senior mans the middle, and he scored a season-high 27 points in the win over Missouri State. If he can avoid foul trouble he should give Santa Clara all they can handle.
Tass leads the Gaels in scoring (13.2) and rebounding (6.4).
Alex Ducas had a career performance against LMU, scoring a season-high 25 points and hitting five threes. Ducas is second on the team in coring at 11.1 ppg.
Tommy Kuhse’s sixth season in the Bay area has been terrific. He sets the tempo on both sides of the ball, and scores 9.9 ppg, while leading the team in assists (3.3).
Logan Johnson is a defensive stud who averages nearly two steals per game, but he finally had an offensive outburst, scoring 26 points to help the Gaels take down Yale a few weeks ago.
Senior big Kyle Bowen joins Tias up front, and he grabs 6.1 rpg.
Santa Clara Broncos
Santa Clara has been very competitive this season, and they could be onto their first 20-win season in five years. The Broncos have won five of their last six games over the past two weeks, with their last three outcomes being double-digit victories.
Herb Sendek’s team has been very efficient this season, scoring a strong 77.4 points per game, while shooting 48.8% from the field, and 37.9% from deep.
The Broncos are led by the inside-outside tandem of Jalen Williams and Josip Vrankic. Williams has come into his own here in his junior season. The 6’6 guard scored a season-high 26 points in the win over BYU, and followed it up with 23 points on the road against San Francisco. Williams is leading the team in scoring at 18.1 ppg, while grabbing 4.1 rpg, and also leading the team in assists (3.4).
Vrankin is enjoying a successful fifth season. His return to the lineup in January has given the Broncos a boost on and off of the court, and he scored 22 in the win over Pacific. The 6’9 big is posting strong averages over 14.9 ppg, 5.4 rpg, and 3.3 apg.
Keshawn Justice has been a menace on the glass this year. After missing the back half of the 2021 season, the 6’7 forward leads the team in rebounding (7.8), while scoring 14.1 ppg.
PJ Pipes has come over from Green Bay and fit right into backcourt alongside Williams. Pipes has reached double figures in all but five games this season, and he’s averaging 10.5 ppg and 3.1 apg.
Parker Braun (8.7 ppg, 6.3 rpg) brings even more length to the lineup at 6’10, and the Mizzou transfer double-doubled in the win over BYU.
CBB Betting Trends:
- SCU is 10-5 ATS in their last 15 games.
- Under is 7-3 in Aggies last 10 games following a ATS win.
- The under is 10-3 in St. Mary’s last 13 games.
Free St. Mary’s Gaels vs. Santa Clara Broncos NCAAB Prediction: St. Mary’s/Santa Clara to go Over
The West Coast Conference has a good five or six teams that can compete with anyone in the country, and two of them will lock horns tonight.
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: Over 137.5
This one is too close to call. Both teams enter the final game on the slate with a lot of momentum, and plausible cases. If Saint Mary’s isn’t able to neutralize this efficient Santa Clara team early, we could see some points. While the Gaels tend to play a slower pace of play, they also possess an efficient offense, capable of scoring to survive. This should be a very contested basketball game, so I’ll lean on the home team thriving.
Take the over for this West Coast matchup.
