The St. Mary’s Gaels will make their annually anticipated trip to Spokane to take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs this weekend.
Gonzaga is favored to win by 17 here.
St. Mary’s Gaels
St. Mary’s has been on a tear since losing to BYU at the start of the calendar year. The Gaels have won seven of their last eight, and they now sit comfortably second in the West Coast Conference. St. Mary’s responded to a road loss to Santa Clara with a 30-point home win over San Diego on Thursday.
Matthias Tias leads an experienced Gaels squad. The 6’10 senior mans the middle, and he scored a season-high 27 points in the win over Missouri State. He’ll need to avoid foul trouble here, as he’ll have his hands full dealing with the Gonzaga frontcourt.
Tass leads the Gaels in scoring (13.2) and rebounding (6.4).
Alex Ducas had a career performance against LMU, scoring a season-high 25 points and hitting five threes. Ducas is second on the team in coring at 11.1 ppg.
Tommy Kuhse’s sixth season in the Bay area has been terrific. He sets the tempo on both sides of the ball, and scores 10.2 ppg, while leading the team in assists (3.4).
Logan Johnson is a defensive stud who averages nearly two steals per game, but he finally had an offensive outburst, scoring 26 points to help the Gaels take down Yale a few weeks ago.
Senior big Kyle Bowen joins Tias up front, and he grabs 6.1 rpg.
Gonzaga Bulldogs
Gonzaga remains as dominant and high octane as ever. The Zags are sitting comfortably in their annual slot atop the West Coast Conference and they’ll look to add another notable win to their impressive resume here. They’ve won eleven games in a row and show no signs of slowing down.
This may quietly be Mark Few’s finest effort yet. Gonzaga leads the nation in both scoring (90.8) and field goal percentage (53.5), while also ranking second in rebounding (42.6).
Drew Timme returned to avenge last season’s Final Four loss and he remains a force on the black. The 6’10 All-American followed up a 30-point performance against BYU, with a season-high 32 points in the road win over Santa Clara.
Timme leads the Zags with 17.4 ppg, while grabbing 6.1 rpg.
Chet Holmgren joins Timme up front, and highly anticipated freshman has enjoyed a strong season thus far. The 7′ center has scored 20 or more in four of his last six games, and he posted a monster line (20/17) in the road win over BYU. Holmgren is scoring 13.4 ppg, leads the Bulldogs in rebounding (8.4), and swats an impressive 3.5 bpg
Andrew Nembhard, like Timme, also returned to avenge last season’s loss to Baylor. The 6’5 point guard scored a game-high 24 points in the win over UCLA, and he posted his third double-double in the road win over BYU last weekend. Nembhard leads the team in assists (5.2), and he gives them a strong presence on both sides of the ball
Julian Strawher’s role has grown in year two substantially. The 6’7 sophomore double-doubled against Duke, and he’s up to 12.9 ppg and 6.1 rpg for the season.
CBB Betting Trends:
- Gonzaga is 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games following a ATS win.
- Cougars are 11-8 ATS in their last 19 road games.
- Over is 6-1 in Cougars last 7 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
Free St. Mary’s Gaels vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs NCAAB Prediction: STM/GON to go Over
The West Coast continues to get closer to Gonzaga every year, but the Zags have shown all season that they’re still the tog dogs.
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: Over 147.5
If there’s any team in this conference that can give Gonzaga a game, it’s this veteran St.Mary’s. A few core members of this group were on the team that took Gonzaga down in 2019, so I’ll sway away from the margin here. I do trust Mark Few’s high octane offense to handle the heavy lifting and hit the magic number though.
Take the over for this West Coast matchup, and remember it’s never a bad idea to bet on Gonzaga covering.
