St. Louis and Richmond are a game apart in the Atlantic 10 standings as the Billikens are up on the Spiders in 5th place at 10 – 5. The Billikens also took a win in the first meeting between these programs back on January 2 when conference play was just beginning.
St Louis had lost 3 of their last 4 games until their win over Saint Joe’s last time out although everyone has found success against the Hawks this season. Francis Okoro had a nice night grabbing 15 points to go with 10 boards in the win as the Billikens improved to 15 – 4 at home.
The Spiders have a wealth of experience to rely on but it really hasn’t produced much more than a 9 – 6 conference record and an 18 – 10 record overall. These two programs are both hoping to make a post-season appearance albeit it looks like an NIT showing will be where they both land. The Bonnies are also expected to be an NIT entrant while the rest of the top-3 are still hoping to be part of the NCAA Tournament.
By the same token, the forecasters out there only have 1 Atlantic 10 team making the big show this season, so maybe we will only see the conference tourney winner reaching the NCAA Tournament this season. Most of the projections I am seeing don’t have VCU, Dayton, or the Bonnies making it to the NCAA tourney as long as Davidson goes on and wins the conference tourney.
St. Louis Billikens
St. Louis and Richmond both know that unless one of them wins the A-10 tourney there is no way they will be a part of the NCAA Tournament this season. The Billikens are still likely headed for a post-season appearance in the NIT which might actually end up featuring 5 A-10 programs.
The Billikens have 3 players averaging double-digits this season and Gibson Jimerson is leading the squad putting up 16.2 PPG. Jimerson is a freshman! He is certainly no average freshman in the grand scheme of things being that this is already his 3rd year with the Billiken program. After only seeing 10 games in 2020 he got his eligibility back and we all know that last year basically didn’t count against any players.
So, with a freshman officially leading the way, Jimerson will be looking to follow up his 17-point effort from the first meeting with the Spiders that earned St. Louis the 76 – 69 win. Jimerson has been a double-digit scorer in all but 5 games this season and the Richmond native will likely be geared up to take the Spiders’ floor tonight.
Francis Okoro makes his big frame recognized night in and night out as the Nigerian native went off for 15 & 10 in the win over St. Josephs last time out. Okoro averages 10.5 PPG and 7.6 RPG and his 59.1% shooting percentage make him a load to deal in the paint.
Yuri Collins put up a career-high 24 points in the 1st win over Richmond and he is second on the depth chart bringing in 11.4 PPG.
Richmond Spiders
The Spiders have 3 tough games to finish out the regular season as they get St, Louis and Dayton at home before finishing up the schedule with a trip to play the Bonnies on the road. Having lost the first meeting with St. Louis, the Spiders can ill-afford to get swept in the season series should both teams end up tied in the standings going into the conference tourney.
While Drake leads the nation with playing experience, the Spiders are another program with a boatload of upperclassmen on the floor. Junior forward Tyler Burton is starting with 3 seniors around him but Burton is the guy leading the team in scoring putting up 16.6 PPG. The big dude wearing the #3 jersey up front is 6-7 and he loves to be around the glass picking up 7.4 boards a night. Burton has been a double-digit scorer in 9 of his last 10 outings as he cruised to a 17-point night in the win over GW last time out.
Grant Golden brings his senior leadership every night adding 14.8 PPG & 6.4 boards a night and Jacob Gilyard is dishing out 6 assists a game to go with his 15 PPG for this Spider program. The one issue the Spiders have is on the defensive side of the floor and the rankings sure point to the problems.
Richmond ranks 300th in the land guarding the 3-ball and outside of the big two rebounders I spoke of, not much else happens around the glass for the Spiders. This team is 318th in defensive rebounding which you would think an experienced coach will pay attention to. Chris Mooney has been here long enough to know better so that could be what ends up holding down this team.
Mooney has been here for nearly 20 years now, although they have not been NCAA Tournament participants since the 2011 run to the sweet 16. It looks like it might be another year before we see them there but an NIT appearance is still likely in the cards this year.
