The St. John’s Red Storm will travel to Ohio on the Xavier Musketeers this Wednesday for the first time this season.
Xavier will be favored to win at home here.
St. John’s Red Storm
St. John’s wasn’t able to build much of a resume through non-conference play, with only wins over in-state foes Fordham and Monmouth standing out. The Red Storm started conference play 2-4, and they enter this on the heels of a home loss to UConn, 63-60.
The Red Storm are one of the highest scoring teams in the nation at 78.5 points per game.
Julian Champagnie leads the charge again after a breakthrough 2020 season. The 6’8 swingman scored a season-high 34 points and grabbed a career-best 16 boards in the win over DePaul, and he’s makes the Red Storm a threat to win every night. Champagnie is averaging a team-leading 18.3 ppg and a team-leading 6.8 rpg.
Posh Alexander compliments him well from the lead guard spot. The 6′ sophomore is quietly one of the best point guards in the country, and he plays an efficient, well-rounded, two-way game. Alexander is second on the team in scoring 14.9 ppg, while grabbing 4.6 rpg, and dishing out a team-leading 5.2 apg.
The NY-born guard also leads the Big East in steals (2.6). The pairing of Alexander and Dylan Addae-Wusu (9.4 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 4.2 apg) has given St. John’s strong backcourt play on both sides of the ball.
Transfer imports Montez Mathis (Rutgers) and Aaron Wheeler (Purdue) start up front and the latter scored a career-high 31 points against Villanova.
Xavier Musketeers
Xavier notched ten wins during non-conference play, including notable victories over Oklahoma State, and in-state foes Ohio State and Cincinnati. The Musketeers got back in the win column last time out with a home victory over UConn, 74-68.
Paul Scruggs has been a mainstay in Cincinnati, and he leads one of the deepest teams in the nation for a fifth straight season. The 6’5 guard returned after setting the school single season assists record, and he’s averaging 12.3 ppg and a team-leading 4.3 apg.
Colby Jones and Nate Johnson join him in the backcourt. Johnson, a 6’4 senior, is third on the team in scoring (10.9), while Jones, a 6’6 guard, has been a stud on the glass. Jones double-doubled in the win over Oklahoma State, and he’s leading Xavier in rebounding (7.5), while scoring 10.3 ppg.
Jack Nunge was a huge pickup from Iowa over the summer. The 7′ big has come in and taken on a larger role early, posting a monster 31/15 line in the bad blood win over Cincinnati. Nunge is up to a team-lead 13.1 ppg and 7.2 rpg.
Andrew Kunkel has been an excellent spark plug, and he’s allowed the team to go small for extensive periods of time. The 6’5 guard scored 25 in the first matchup against Butler and the Belmont transfer is scoring 8.4 ppg.
Zach Freemantle had a bigger role last season, but Nunge’s arrival has toned things down a bit for him. Freemantle still remains a starter and a key piece to what the Musketeers do, and he scored a season-high 23 points in the win over Butler.
CBB Betting Trends:
- St. John’s is 6-6 ATS in their last 12 road games.
- Xavier are 8-4 ATS in their last 12 home games.
- Over is 5-2 in Red Storm’s last last seven games.
Free St. John’s Red Storm vs. Xavier Musketeers NCAAB Prediction: Xavier to Cover
This is a key stretch for Xavier, as their one win-streak away from the Big Dance, while also being one bad stretch of play away from the bubble.
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: Xavier -6.5
I trust that Travis Steele will get this veteran team ready for what should be viewed a must-win game. Paul Scruggs double-doubled against the Red Storm last season, and he’ll likely play big again here. It’d be nice for this one to open lower, but I like Xavier winning and covering at home here.
Take Xavier’s spread for this Big East battle.
