The Creighton Blue Jays will host the St. John’s Red Storm for a Big East battle Tuesday night.
HISTORY: Providence leads the all-time series 19-12, but things have been very see-saw like since Creighton joined the Big East, and they’ve traded each of the past six meetings.
Creighton will be slightly favored to win at home here.
St. John’s Red Storm
St. John’s wasn’t able to build much of a resume through non-conference play, with only wins over in-state foes Fordham and Monmouth standing out. The Red Storm have started conference play 2-2, dropping both of their games on the road.
The Red Storm are one of the highest scoring teams in the nation at 82.5 ppg, good for 11th in the country.
Julian Champagnie leads the charge again after a breakthrough 2020 season. The 6’8 swingman scored a season-high 34 points and grabbed a career-best 16 boards in the win over DePaul, and he’s makes the Red Storm a threat to win every night. Champagnie is averaging a Big East-leading 21.4 ppg and a team-leading 7.2 rpg.
Posh Alexander compliments him well from the lead guard spot. The 6′ sophomore is quietly one of the best point guards in the country, and he plays an efficient, well-rounded, two-way game. Alexander is second on the team in scoring 15.5 ppg, while grabbing 4.7 rpg, and dishing out a team-leading 5.1 apg.
The NY-born guard also leads the Big East in steals (2.6). The pairing of Alexander and Dylan Addae-Wusu (10.5 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 4.4 apg) has given St. John’s strong backcourt play on both sides of the ball.
Transfer imports Joel Soriano (Fordham) and Aaron Wheeler (Purdue) start up front. Soriano will have to avoid foul trouble in this one, as Creighton plays through their bigs.
Creighton Bluejays
Creighton jumped out to a 8-3 start during the non-conference slate, picking up victories over BYU and in-state rival Nebraska along the way. They began Big East play by stomping Villanova at home in December, but the Wildcats have dropped their last two games to Villanova and Xavier on the road.
Creighton is built from the inside, and they shoot a solid 48% as a team.
Ryan Hawkins has responded to a bad showing at Villanova with a double-double against Xavier. The 6’7 senior has four of them in last five games, and he’s been the Jays most reliable threat from inside and out. Hawkins has hit three of more treys in four of his last five games, and he leads the team in scoring (13.4) and rebounding (7.7)
Alex O’Connell is finally receiving ample playing time at the college level and he’s thriving. The 6’6 guard led the team in scoring during the non-conference stretch, and he coming off 22-point game against the Musketeers. He’s up to 12.5 ppg and 5.3 rpg for the season.
Ryan Nembhard appears to be growing with each start. The 6’2 freshman orchestrates the offense, and he’s averaging a well-rounded 12.5 ppg, 3.2 rpg, and a team-leading 4.5 apg.
Ryan Kalkbrenner anchors the middle at 7’1. Big Kalk had a monster game against Marquette, going for 20 points and 12 boards, and he’s blocked four or more shots in three of the last four games. Kalkbrenner is scoring 12.1 ppg, while grabbing 6.8 rpg.
CBB Betting Trends:
- St. John’s is 6-4 ATS in their last ten road games.
- Creighton is 7-3 ATS in their last ten home games.
- Over is 9-2 in the Bluejays last eleven games.
Free Providence Friars vs. Creighton Bluejays NCAAB Prediction: Creighton to Cover
How well St. John’s handles Creighton’s size will determine the outcome of this one. The Red Storm haven’t played well on the road, while the Bluejays haven’t played at CHI since their 20-point win over Villanova.
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: Creighton -4.5
This should be a high scorer game, featuring two very different offenses who have the pieces to fill it up. It could come down to one team getting more stops than the other, and we like Creighton’s size on their home floor here. Containing Julian Champagnie will be a task, but the Jays have the defense to do it.
