The 5th annual Never Forget Tribute Classic is back after the 2020 event was canceled as four programs will compete at the Prudential Center in Newark on Saturday.
UConn returns the festivities for a second appearance after their 2018 bout with Florida State that resulted in a loss, 79 – 71. This will be the Bonnies’ first trip to the Classic and this is one event that means a lot to us New Yorkers and all who were affected by the 9/11 bullshit that none of us should have had to go through. Yeah, that fucking day sucked for all of us, but at least we can help support the education of the kids who lost their parents on that ugly day in American history.

St. Bonaventure Bonnies
The Bonnies are riding a 3-game win streak into New Jersey for their first appearance at the Never Forget Tribute Classic. Since the loss to Northern Iowa this team has gotten back on track and they’ll get a short-handed UConn program to deal with on Saturday.
The Bonnies have their own injury concerns to deal with now that Kyle Lofton has sat out of the last two games. Lofton leads this team in scoring and this is not Coppin State and Loyola across the floor now. It must be nice to lose one of your main dudes for a few games and still have the talent to not have it hurt too badly.
Jaren Holmes is right behind Lofton in scoring putting up 17.2 PPG to go with those 7 boards a night as well. Holmes is 1 of 3 Bonnies averaging over 7 rebounds a night and this team shoots extremely well from the charity stripe. The Bonnies are ranked 22nd in the nation making 78.7% of their free throws this year.
Jalen Adaway and Jaren Holmes picked up the slack in the Loyola game last time out leading the way with 22 points apiece in the convincing 84 – 71 win. Not that this team is deep, to say the least, but they have enough in place to still produce points.
UConn Huskies
Well, I can only assume you caught my West Virginia vs. UConn preview here on the site and I had to call for the Mountaineers to take that W. They did, and now the Huskies are still without Martin and Sanogo who are 2 of the top-3 scores for the Huskies this season.
Adamo Sanogo was slowly becoming more of a household name on a team that isn’t exactly filled with them this season. Hey, what I know and the public knows are two different things and I can’t wait for him to get back on the court again. The abdominal strain is still causing him to sit out but we are hearing he is feeling better day by day.
We can expect both of them to get back onto the court but for now, they are sidelined for this game and possibly one or two more. Hopefully, by the time conference play gets underway the Huskies will be back to full capacity again.
I would say that UConn did pretty well against West Virginia despite the loss, 56 – 53. Well, maybe Jordan Hawkins didn’t play so well as he was 0 for 7 from the floor and 0 for 3 from distance but he made two free-throws I guess.
Whaley and Cole do what Whaley and Cole do as they led the way with 15 and 14 points respectfully. Cole was a bit of a mess with the 5 turnovers and it will take some time to see this team gel without two main cogs in the rotation.
You can clearly see that depth is a concern for the Huskies too, being that we only saw 10 points from the bench from only 3 players who came on to relieve the starters. That 3-man bench went 4 for 12 from the floor and missed every 3-point attempt they put up (0 – 6).
