The Thunderbirds and Grizzlies are neck and neck in the Big Sky standings in 3rd and 4th place as the conference tournament is right around the corner. Southern Utah and Montana State both trail Weber State (11-2) with a 9 – 2 conference record while the Grizzlies are 8 – 4 with the only perfect home record in the Big Sky Conference.
The Griz are a stellar 11 – 0 at Dahlberg Arena but the road has not been so kind to this Montana program. After a justifiable loss to Weber State on the road, the Griz are coming off a strange defeat to Idaho State as 10-point favorites now looking to shake off a 2-game losing slide. The Griz didn’t just lose to one of the worst teams in the Big Sky Conference, they got the shit knocked out of them, 86 – 63, and simply gave up against the Bengals… the now 4-win Bengals program that has played like shit all year long destroyed the Griz so this is a must-rebound game for Montana.
In the meantime, Southern Utah is riding a 4 game win streak having won 6 of their last 7 outings and yet here they are playing the underdog tonight? Oh, we’ll see about all that, won’t we?
Southern Utah Thunderbirds
Underdogs? Oh, baby, what I would give to be sitting on this bus for the trip to Missoula. Imagine, the Thunderbirds just had 5 different players lay double-digits on Eastern Washington last time out so all of their games will all fall apart on the bus ride? Yeah, that’s a no!
The T-Birds are ranked 21st in the nation doing one thing and doing it well… Scoring! Everyone that sees time on the floor produces for Coach Simon and this team doesn’t want to let what happened last season happen again. Remember now, this Southern Utah program was 20 – 4 a year ago but as we all know they didn’t get anywhere near the NCAA Tournament after losing in the Big Sky Conference Tournament.
So, there may not be a ton of depth on this squad but the guys who do get on the floor are all expected to produce something. In the win over EWU last time out, Dre Marin was the only starter who didn’t find his way to double-digits but he still landed 8 points despite being in foul trouble.
Aanen Moody came on and grabbed 11 points in 22 minutes off the bench and it brought his average up just above 6 PPG for the effort. Marin is still taking in 11.8 PPG despite not getting his usual 33 minutes on the floor last time out with that foul trouble.
I haven’t even gotten started on the 3 main guys that produce points on a nightly basis for the Thunderbirds, nor have I talked about the offensive rebounding numbers this team manages to put up.
The T-Birds rank 29th in the country in offensive rebounding and Maizen Fausett is a beast underneath the rim. Fausett takes in 12.6 PPG and 8.9 RBG, and even Moddy came off the bench and added 5 boards of his own last time out. Everyone on this team is back on defense and getting second-chance shots on the offensive side of the court has been helpful to this team all year.
Sorry, I went to UConn, and then I went to graduate school at Montana State. Oh, let me tell you how much fun I had watching Idaho fucking State kick the Griz’s ass on Friday night. Seriously, this is a game I loved seeing the Griz lose knowing that they are right on my Cats’ tails in the Big Sky Standings. Ever been to a Cat – Griz game? Oh, try the football version first, and then we’ll talk about hoops later.
Anyway, obviously, the Griz offense is nothing like the T-Birds display of talent although if making free-throws matters, and it does, Montana surely holds that edge on a lot of programs. The Grizzlies rank 4th in the nation converting 79.9% of their shots from the charity stripe but the 72 PPG only gets Montana to 163rd in the land.
Idaho State took a 10-point lead to the half against Montana and I think anyone who knew better would have expected the Griz to respond with a decent 2nd stanza to not just make it close but likely come out on top of the Bengals. Losing to Idaho State is like being 15 and losing a game of Madden to your 6-year old sister, LoL
No disrespect intent… no, wait, yes I do mean to disrespect Idaho State because I feel like it! So, how the hell do you recover from such a poor outing especially after losing to conference leader Weber State the game before. Montana came out flat and they paid the price for it and whatever Coach Travis DeCuire said to the boys in the locker room was an epic fail too.
Brandon Whitney. That’s it and this review of the Montana game last time out was brought to you by me! Whitney put up 19 points and led everyone with that effort because no other starter scored more than 5 points all night.
I get this Griz team plays a helluva lot better here in Missoula but Southern Utah is about to hand Montana their first home loss of the season tonight.
