The Cal Bears can’t seem to get out of the even mark as this team has been at or under .500 all season thus far. California found an easy win over Idaho State to pull themselves to 5 – 5 and the line setters have made them bucket favorites against the Broncos on Saturday.
Santa Clara will be playing their first true road game of 2021 as they have played 8 home games along with their trip to the SoCal Challenge where they ended up in the finals against Fresno State. After a convincing win over TCU, the Bulldogs eventually lost to Fresno State in that SoCal finals and they have split their last 4 outings 2 – 2 since.
The Bears have been enjoying most of the season in their barn having played 6 of their opening 10 games here at Haas Pavilion (5 – 1).
Cal and Santa Clara have a common opponent this season as they have both taken on Fresno State in 2021. The Bulldogs improved to 5 – 0 with their win over Santa Clara in the SoCal Challenge finals. Cal handed Fresno State their first loss of 2021 just 3 days later when the Bears won their matchup, 65 – 57.
Santa Clara Broncos
The Broncos jumped out to that fantastic 5 – 0 start and it’s been a little rocky over the last 5 outings for this Herb Sendek-led program. I was going to assume that you already know about what his influence is with this team being that he has only been coaching in 1985 right out of college.
The Broncos were so unfortunate to have that 20-win season go for naught because it has been Sendek’s best record in his time here and there were no post-season tournaments in 2020.
Anyway, the Broncos are a solid shooting team that sits 10th in the nation with that stout 50.5% from the floor in 2021. Let’s make no mistake that there is zero depth on this team and Sendek relies on 7 guys right now to get things done.
Even as we are approaching January at 10 games into the season, you see that the minutes are being chewed up by Jalen Williams, Now that Josip Vrankic has been absent the last handful of games, Justice and Braun just both played 39 and 37 minutes last time out against a Mount. St. Mary’s program for goodness sake.
Those minutes will have to last a while because it will be tough to just bury your starting 5 with minutes and we know anything can happen with fouls in a high-scoring game. Luckily, this team knows to not commit stupid fouls to stay on the floor long enough to put in all of those minutes.
California Bears
The Bears have their three-headed studs and then you see the production really starts to drop from there. Andre Kelly leads this team putting up just about 15 points a night but this offense only puts up 65.6 points per game.
The rankings aren’t all that much of a big story with only 10 games played among mostly non-conference schedules, as that will start to weigh in more as conference play begins in January.
Cal will get this and two more winnable home games to finish their non-conference affairs and they will head to Stanford to start Pac 12 play on January 2.
Lars Thiemann had a nice night off the bench against Idaho State with 12 points and this bench will need to start producing more as the season goes on. In the loss to Utah in the previous game, only one bench player had more than 3 points and it led to the 10-point loss to the Utes, 68 – 58.
Getting past Idaho State is nothing to write your parents a letter over so this game against a pretty good Santa Clara outfit will provide more experience against a good opponent.
Oh yeah, #15! My man Grant Anticevich can ball and he has already scored in double-digits in 8 of the 10 games Cal has played putting up 3 double-doubles as well. Tonight will be the night he finally just goes off and has a 19 / 12 performance, you can just feel he is getting to that point. He seems to get stuck at that 10-point scoring number but if he can just bury even 2 or 3 of those misses tonight he can be a big figure in this game.
Kelly and Anticevich are both just aware of the importance of the glass and they each will be caught under the rim snatching boards all season long.

What does it say? It says 75 – 72 Cal at home and this place is just too good to the boys in gold and blue. The Bears should find a win and they should both have a good share of success scoring tonight. The Over is the play!
