Last year, in his third season as the head coach at Saint Louis, Travis Ford won twenty games, finished with a winning record in conference play and earned an NCAA Tournament bid — all firsts for him at SLU.

The Billikens have improved in each subsequent season under Ford and the trend has so far continued in Ford’s fourth year. Saint Louis lost just twice in the non-conference, to Seton Hall and Auburn. It beat Kansas State, Belmont and won at Boston College.
The Atlantic-10 is tough this season, led by an explosive Dayton team that looks like it will be a permanent fixture in the nation’s top-25. Still, SLU is projected to fall in that next tier, which could be a big one.
According to the Simple Rating System (SRS), an algorithm developed by Sports-Reference, Virginia Commonwealth (12.3), Rhode Island (10.0), Saint Louis (9.5), Richmond (8.7), Davidson (8.7) and Duquesne (8.6) can all be considered co-primary challengers to topple Dayton.
There is no better rebounder, pound-for-pound, in the country than Jordan Goodwin. The 6’3” junior guard, who arrived on campus ranked the fifty-second best recruit by the Recruiting Services Consensus Index, averages 11.4 rebounds per game, ninth-best in the nation.
Duquesne Dukes
Of the six teams the SRS considers within striking range of Dayton in the conference, Duquesne is the most surprising.
The Dukes began the season 10–0 but have lost their last two, on two different neutral floors, first to UAB by nine and then an ugly one, by twenty-two, to Marshall, which the SRS ranks 139 out of 353 Division I teams.
Duquesne got off to a painfully slow start and only finished as close as it did because forward and leading-scorer Marcus Weathers hit for a career-high twenty-five points and thirteen rebounds on ten-of-fourteen shooting.
Subtract Weathers from the equation and Duquesne shot a dismal thirteen-of-sixty-eight (19%) from the field.
