The Wisconsin Badgers are in the pole position towards the Big Ten Conference tournament at the moment, but nothing has been won yet and there is a lot of basketball left to play before we get there.
The 14th ranked Badgers have won 4 of their last 5 games and are coming off a 70 – 62 win over Michigan State in East Lansing. At 10 – 3 in Beg Ten play, the Badgers and Illini are tied coming into this weekend atop the standings but the Scarlet Knights are only 2 games behind at 8 – 5 in the thick of the chase for the top-seed.
Yes, I said Rutgers is in the chase for the #1 seed in the Big Ten tourney and the only people who are surprised by that is anyone not in this Scarlet Knight locker room. After the loss to Northwestern, the Knights had fallen to 12 – 9 overall and 6 – 5 in Big Ten play and there were a lot of doubts starting to creep in New Jersey. Those doubts got put aside after wins over Michigan State and Ohio State as the Knights look to build on two straight big wins.
Rutgers Scarlet Knights
It was 64 – 52 and Ohio State has the Knights beat, right? After the huge win against Michigan State, it looked like it would be a brief taste of victory as the Buckeyes were about to hand Rutgers another costly loss to their post-season hopes.
Hey now! Rutgers landed the last 10 points of the game and took a 66 – 64 victory to rip defeat away and celebrate a back-to-back win when every game is huge right now. The Scarlet Knights will only have 6 games remaining on their regular-season schedule and a second meeting with this Badgers squad will be included in that run to the finish line. Granted, anything can happen come conference tourney time but I don’t know how many folks give the Knights a real chance to run the table when the tourney does get underway.
So, At 14 – 9 and with 7 games to go, a 20-win campaign is still in the cards for a program that didn’t have the national attention as many Big Ten programs have had all season.
As is the case with so many programs this year, the Knights bench doesn’t produce much and either squad really came up with anything to speak of in the win over Ohio State. The Buckeyes had 7 points from their subs and Coach Pikiell only had two bench players combine for 6 points in the game. This is the story around so many campuses around the nation so we’re accustomed to it at this point.
Leading scorer Ron Harper Jr. did a disappearing act despite the Knights coming away with the W. Harper only found his way to 6 points and he only hit one of his FG attempts all night long. Harper is averaging 15.4 PPG but luckily Geo Baker picked up the slack. Baker came away with 25 points and he is right behind Harper in the depth chart putting up 12.3 PPG now after that effort.
Caleb McConnell also struggled from the floor only finding 4 points from 29 minutes on the floor as he was in foul trouble early and he never got in any type of shooting groove.
Do you have Rutgers on the bubble? That is the chatter right now and I think we all can assume a strong finish and a deep run in the Big Ten tourney would be pretty convincing to the committee. Any invitation to the few post-season tournaments is positive so let’s see how it all plays out.
Wisconsin Badgers
It is nice to be on top of the Big Ten standings and it is also the one thing that puts the biggest target on your back, obviously. These two programs will meet twice down the stretch of the regular season so the video session next week will surely include noteworthy action from this first meeting in Madison.
Previewing Wisconsin basketball is an easy assignment. Davis, Davison, and the rest of the Badgers find ways to contribute where they can. Hey, it worked out all right in the win over Sparty last time out because Johhny Davis landed 25 points while everyone around him chewed up the glass. All 9 players that saw the floor took in at least one board and limiting second chances has been the mantra of this program since 1468. No, really, I googled it! LoL
Seriously, when defense and rebounding stop being a thing in Wisconsin someone let me know when you see it change so I can act as shocked as everyone else in the country. Ranking 95th is not a concern for a team that only gives up 66.1 PPG and knows that they can keep that number from happening if they really put their minds to it.
Brad Davison had a poor showing with only 8 points in the win over Michigan State, and we really didn’t hear his name much the entire affair. Despite playing 35 minutes, Davison was 2 for 10 from the floor with an assist and 2 boards which is relatively poor from someone this team relies on a night in and night out basis. Davison is scoring 14.7 PPG right behind Davis in the depth chart so the Badgers will need his influence to be large down the stretch to maintain that top position in the Big Ten standings.
CBB Betting Trends:

Free Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. Wisconsin Badgers NCAAB Betting Prediction:
The opening line is 8.5 and I am sorry but I am a ‘think dog’ kinda guy. Wait, I am not sorry for that at all actually! Anyway, I don’t see Rutgers getting beat by double-digits and it would basically take that happening to spoil my ticket. I got the NJ side with those points.
