Despite Michigan’s recent struggles, and Rutgers’ recent success, this matchup should prove to be a hell of a game. And Madison Square Garden as the venue only increases the “watchability”, so to speak.
I finished January at 13-3 on my CBB picks posted here on CappersPicks! I hope to start February off just as hot, so let’s get into it…
Rutgers Scarlet Knights
Even after a road loss to Iowa, the Scarlet Knights are hanging on to their top 25 ranking, coming into this matchup ranked 25th.

The Scarlet Knights are having a very good season. At 7-3 in conference play, they are just a game back of the Spartans and the Fighting Illini for first place in the Big Ten (the best conference in college ball).
What’s more impressive, however, are their ATS stats. The Scarlet Knights are 14-5-1 ATS this season. Read that again. Since Nov. 26th, the Scarlet Knights are 13-2 ATS. Read that again. They’ve covered 11 of their last 12 games. Read that again.
They’ve only failed to cover in a road win against Pittsburgh and a home win against Nebraska. They are monsters against the spread, both at home and on the road.
The Scarlet Knights are powered by their defense. They’re ranked 9th in KenPom adjusted defense, and their 60.8 PA/G is 16th best in the nation. They’ve only allowed more than 72 points in a game twice this season; at Michigan State and at Iowa (both losses, I should mention).
Michigan Wolverines
My grandparents live in Ann Arbor, and so i’m a bit of a homer when it comes to Michigan.
Which is why i’ve been so god-damned disappointed by their performance this season. The Wolverines stink. Their 3-6 conference record has them just above Nebraska and Northwestern for worst in the Big Ten.
However, for some reason, the advanced stats don’t reflect that. They are still 27th in the nation in KenPom overall adjusted efficiency, which is only two spots behind the Scarlet Knights.
Their 28th ranked offense seems to fuel that narrative. Specifically, the fact that they are ultra efficient on that end. Their effective FG% of 53.7 has them top-30 in the nation. They shoot over 55% from inside the arc and almost never turn the ball over.
Unfortunately, the Wolverines are a lousy 10-10 ATS on the season, and only 1-4 SU and ATS in their last five games. Hot seat: Juwan Howard.
CBB Betting Trends:
- RUTG are 17-5-2 ATS in their last 24 vs. Big Ten.
- RUTG are 19-7-3 ATS in their last 29 games overall.
- RUTG are 11-1 ATS in their last 12 games.
- MICH are 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8 vs. Big Ten.
Free Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. Michigan Wolverines NCAAB Prediction:
Here’s something interesting: Rutgers are 0-7 SU and 2-5 ATS in their last seven against Michigan.
That makes zero sense. However, this is the first matchup between the two this year. And while Rutgers has taken a leap, Michigan doesn’t appear to be same team they were last season.
This game is a lot closer than it appears on the surface. These teams are neck and neck in terms of KenPom advanced stats. However, Michigan has a clear offensive advantage while Rutgers has a clear defensive advantage.
I always side with the better defense, even on a neutral court as electric as Madison Square Garden. And, the ATS stats are too lop-sided to ignore. The Scarlet Knights are animals against the spread, while the Wolverines are overly average.
As a Michigan homer, it makes me sad to say that Rutgers should win and cover here.
