Rice Owls
The Rice Owls head into this matchup with the #2 Texas Longhorns as massive road underdogs. Right now, they getting 28.5 points at Moody Center.
In their 8 games so far, Rice is 6-2 and I would say they have played pretty well. When you look at their previous games and their remaining games, though, there is not one team that is even remotely close to the level of the Longhorns.
Of course, they want to win every game they can, and being able to pull off the upset against Texas would be huge for their program, but their main focus on Monday evening should be not getting their doors blown off. If they can hold their own and make the game somewhat competitive against a team of this level, they would certainly take it.
Rice last played a little over a week ago and they earned the 83-71 win over Texas State. The Bobcats did show some resistance in the second half of the game, but it was not enough to overcome the lead the Owls had.
If the Owls are going to pull off the improbable on Monday evening, they are going to need their key offensive guys to really step up and have big games. In the 2022-2023 season, it is Travis Evee and Quincy Olivari that are their two leading scorers with both scoring over 16 points a game.
Even with those players being true offensive threats, they are really going to have their hands full when trying to score consistently against this defense for Texas. Frankly, I do not have a ton of faith in the Owls’ offense to really do a whole lot against this stout defensive unit.
Rice will look to slow down the game and not let the Longhorns control the pace of this game, but that is much easier said than done. Texas does not have a great offense, but they definitely have enough talent to make this game very one-sided early and often.
The Owls will certainly treat this as any other game, but it just makes it very tricky when a team has not seen opponents on this level during the season. Texas plays with a rhythm and intensity that is just hard to replicate.
Texas Longhorns
Texas has started off the year quite well and they head into this matchup with a record of 7-1. So far, they have still not played a true road game this season.
This team did lose 85-78 to Illinois for their first loss of the season on December 6th, but they got right back into the win column with a 88-43 thrashing of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
On the young season, a few impressive victories for this squad include taking down Gonzaga and Creighton in out-of-conference matchups. It will definitely be exciting to watch them when they really get into their Big 12 schedule, which is never easy for anyone.
As noted earlier, the Longhorns do feature a very good defense and that is the strength of their team. Even with their offense not being off the charts, what they bring to the table on the other side of the court has helped them get to where they currently are.
Similar to the Owls, the Longhorns are also a team that is in no hurry on the offensive end. They are not afraid to really slow the game down, which is one of many reasons they are not scoring a ton of points per game this season.
In a game like this, I would expect guys like Tyrese Hunter and Marcus Carr to really step up. The two guards lead the team in minutes and points and are certainly the strength of their offense.
This game is another opportunity for the Longhorns to really focus on themselves and make the little adjustments needed for when the games really start to get tough. When facing an opponent that is clearly inferior, it really just comes down to staying focused and executing the game plan in order to get the win.

In this spot, I really do not have a ton of faith in Rice to keep things that close. I just do not feel they have the firepower to do so.
Texas is not elite offensively, but they are still talented enough to expose a defense that is not as big, strong, or talented as they are.
Another reason for my confidence in the Longhorns is their tough defense, which I feel will be just too much for the Owls to handle. Unless something surprising happens, I am not expecting a ton of points from the visitors.
Yes, this is a very high number in CBB, but I really do not see it being all that close after the first few minutes.
