So, it all began in 1982 when the first MAAC tournament was played. Iona hosted one of the first-ever MAAC tourney games on March 5, 1982, and I know this because I was there! I was born in New Rochelle and raised about 2 miles away from Iona College in Larchmont. Iona won that event and amazingly they were still not invited to the NCAA Tournament despite the 24 – 9 record and the MAAC tourney win.
Since then, Iona has played the most MAAC tourney games, has the most MAAC tourney wins, and at 61 – 27, they are THE ONLY MAAC program to have better than a .500 record over the 30-year history of the event.
Quinnipiac joined the MAAC in 2014 and they have appeared in 10 MAAC tournament games since. The Bobcats are 3 – 7 and the line setters are expecting Quinnipiac to lose this tilt being played in Atlantic City, NJ.
Marist are the slight favorites at -2.5 although they are 11- 24 from their 35 games played in the MAAC tourney thus far. Neither program has ever advanced to the finals and the odds of them making it the distance are certainly against them. However, this is why they play games because you just never know when the time will come!
Quinnipiac Bobcats
The Bobcats are likely headed for a one-and-done showing here and we know this because of how terribly they ended the regular season. Quinnipiac lost their final 6 games of the regular season and things really just fell apart after the win over this same Marist program back on January 28. The Bobcats took a 94 – 87 win over the Red Foxes and then the wheels simply fell off the bus.
Quinnipiac was 10 – 6 right around that game and now that you see the 12 – 16 record you know how bad it really got down the stretch of the season. The Bobcats lost 9 of their last 10 games which includes their current 6-game slide coming into tonight’s affair.
Matt Balanc leads this program putting up 14.5 PPG and everyone thought he would be the go-to dude for this program when he started the season scoring 25 points against Maryland. Albeit a loss, Balanc only matched that effort once the entire campaign with the 31-point night against Manhattan mid-season.
Free-throw shooting is certainly a plus for this team as you scroll through their roster you can see why. The rankings reveal as much showing the Bobcats ranked 32nd in the nation converting 76.1% of their shots from the charity stripe as a team.
Kevin Marfo does so much for this team contributing 9.7 PPG and 10.2 boards a night while also dropping off 4 assists a game. Marfo is a stat stuffer! With Balanc and Marfo producing points, this team is relatively deep having 7 players averaging over 8 PPG. In this day and age that is stupid-good because benches all around the nation are filled with so much shit and lack of input!
Marist Red Foxes
Marist may be the team that’s favored and sure the Bobcats are struggling to find wins but this is tougher to call than you might think. After the 6-game win streak had us all thinking Marist was doing well, they lost their final 2 games of the regular season to Canisius and Niagara in ugly fashion so they are not exactly brimming with confidence either.
No program wants to be hoping to erase a losing skid to start a conference tournament because momentum is a big thing to have on your side.
The Foxes have a pair of players averaging double-digits as Jao Ituka and Ricky Wright put up 15. 5 and 13.6 PPG respectively. Marist doesn’t get much production from their bench as is the case with plenty of programs around the country. Down the stretch of the regular season, Coach Dunne tried to get his entire roster some minutes to be a little better prepared for this event. We won’t talk about what happened on the final day of the regular season though, because the 52-point effort was one shit effort all around.
Dunne’s future might be in doubt with only one winning campaign from his four in Poughkeepsie, and I have seen a lot of this team first hand because I go see Marist games often. I now live right off of Route 9 behind the galleria if you know the area and I have inside contacts to get me into McCann whenever I ask for tickets. Suffering through watching Marist games is the other issue but we’ll still muddle through. I love the MAAC!
Marist should have plenty of success scoring and I don’t see why Quinnipiac will struggle finding points tonight either. Marist totals are rarely in the 140s and I think the line setters are tipping their hand with that number. Late fouls and free throws should help us get over the number so that is where we are going to make a play.
CBB Betting Trends:
- Over is 6-2-1 in Red Foxes’ last 9 games as a favorite.
- Over is 5-2 in Red Foxes’ last 7 vs. a team with a losing straight-up record.
- Bobcats are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 neutral site games.
Free Quinnipiac Bobcats vs. Marist Red Foxes NCAAB Betting Prediction:
I can’t leave the 141 sitting there. As I explained a bit, the defense was just not a thing for the Bobcats down the stretch of the season and Marist looked disgusting in their final two games on that side of the floor. Combined, we see points and cash tickets on the over 141.
