Southern Utah will hope to once again take advantage of home court as they host the Pilots for this TBC quarterfinal game in Cedar City. The Thunderbirds have won 12 of their 15 games played here at the Events Center and we might have quite a shootout in store for this contest.
The line setters are expecting a high-scoring affair posting a 155 on the total and before I ever get to my prediction you can just go ahead and put that Over on your board. These two offenses are about to produce a game that might see the winner scoring in the 90s.
The Pilots played their WCC schedule to Overs constantly down the stretch of the regular season and this Portland team couldn’t be held under 73 points by all but one of their last 11 opponents. The WCC certainly has some pretty decent programs the likes of Gonzaga and St. Mary’s as well as Santa Clara and boy, did those two produce a game to remember with almost 200 points scored.
Portland Pilots
Portland’s offense may rank 103rd in the nation averaging 74.1 PPG, but as mentioned the numbers improved tremendously as the back third of the season unfolded. Ironically, the Pilots’ biggest rivals Portland State were the last team to beat Southern Utah in the Big Sky Conference Tournament, and that happened early in the quarterfinals as well.
The Pilots are Thunderbirds are both getting their first real taste of success in the post-season as the Pilots finally won their first-ever tournament game with their win over New Orleans, 94 – 73. Youth has prevailed of late because Head Coach Shantay Legans has been playing freshman and sophomores helping build towards the future of Pilot hoops. Legans in his first season with Portland but he knows plenty about the Thunderbirds as a result of being a coach with the Eastern Washington Eagles since 2009 before taking over this program last year.
If you recall, Legans got Eastern Washington to the NCAA Tournament in 2021 having won the Big Sky Conference Tournament. Despite the loss, he decided to move on to the WCC knowing he would be starting over again with a young program. Legans is 7 – 3 as a head coach against Southern Utah from his time in the Big Sky Conference.
Tyler Robertson is worth the price of admission and he landed the team’s second triple-double in program history earlier this season against LMU. Robertson takes in just under 15 PPG and he is surrounded by dudes who can score with him. Moses Wood and Chris Austin are both averaging over 14 PPG and this program converts 80.6% of their free throws. That’s good for 2nd in the entire nation and that certainly helps keep games close.
Southern Utah Thunderbirds
Southern Utah also has four players averaging double-digits this season and home-cookin’ has fed this program nicely this season. Tevian Jones is also worth the cost to get in the stands to watch his talents as he leads this program taking in just under 15 PPG. His teammate John Knight III is also above 14 PPG this year although Knight was the one who landed the 1st-team All-Big Sky nod over Jones who garnered a 3rd-team All-Big Sky bid.
Maizen Fausett also came away with a 3rd-team All-Big Sky honor as the senior forward is putting up 12.1 PPG in his final season as a T-Bird.
This Thunderbird program is putting up 78.8 PPG which has them ranked 26th in the nation while the other side of the floor doesn’t reveal such good news. Defensively, the T-Birds rank 261st allowing opponents to score an average of 71.9 PPG.
Southern Utah was 19 – 11 to the Over this season and we don’t really need to spell out much more of a preview because you know, I know, and the line setters know that we can expect points to be scored in this TBC quarterfinal affair.
