Pitt Panthers
After winning just three Atlantic Coast Conference games all season in his first year on the job, Head Coach Jeff Capel has started his second conference season at Pittsburgh 2–2.
After two miserable years with Kevin Stallings at the helm, Pittsburgh turned to Capel, who was the youngest head coach in Division I when he took his first job at Virginia Commonwealth in 2002.

Three ACC wins in his first season represented an infinite improvement over Stallings, who went 0–18 in his second and final season at Pitt. And while the Panthers may not return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the Jamie Dixon era yet, Capel has brought positive change and is building a program that aspires to win with defense.
Pitt’s three leading scorers are all his own recruits: Trey McGowens and Xavier Johnson, both 6’3″ sophomore guards, and Justin Champagnie, a larger freshman guard who also happens to lead the Panthers in rebounding.
They lack quality front-court players and barely rank inside the top-300 in total defensive rebounds but the Panthers have strong on-ball defenders outside. Opponents are shooting just over forty percent this season, which has Pitt safely inside the top-100.
Miami Hurricanes
The backcourt is where Miami gets almost all its scoring. Three experienced guards combine to average forty-five of Miami’s seventy-three points per game.
Chris Lykes stands just 5’7″ but leads the Hurricanes in both points and assist (2.8 per game).
Kameron McGusty, who sat out last season after transferring from Oklahoma, is just behind him and adds nearly five rebounds per game at 6’5″.
