The Oregon Ducks arrive at McKale Center as double-digit underdogs against #3 Arizona and that comes on the heels of being swept by Arizona State. The Sun Devils took the second meeting of the series with Oregon on Thursday which could possibly leave the Ducks 0 – 3 vs the Arizona programs this season. This is the only meeting between these two programs in conference play which is probably a good thing for Oregon fans.
Speaking of the Sun Devils, the Wildcats began their current 7-game win streak with a victory over that well-known Arizona State program, 67 – 56, back on January 28. The Wildcats will kick off a 3-game road swing after this home outing and they’ll come home games against Cal and Stanford to wrap up the regular season.
Arizona hasn’t quite clinched the top seed for the Pac-12 tournament but their 13 – 1 record in conference play has surely been impressive. A second game with USC will be the last of that 3-game road trip and that result could affect the final standings.
Oregon Ducks
The Ducks only have to face this Wildcat team once in 2022 and that probably suits everyone just fine. The line setters are pointing to a sure defeat tonight for the Ducks so they will obviously try to use that as motivation tonight as 13-point underdogs on the road against the now #3 program in the land.
The Ducks didn’t lose to Arizona State last time, they got their ass handed to them, 81 – 57. The 24-point loss is another example of how we all wonder where the 72.1 PPG comes from every night according to the rankings. This is why numbers can be deceiving because the eye test against good teams sees this Ducks team struggle more often than not.
The Sun Devils aren’t even that good and this Ducks team barely found 57 points against them last time out and Arizona’s defense can shut your weak offense down for minutes at a time. While we all recognize what the Wildcats offense can do, Arizona only allows teams to shoot 37% from the floor which ranks them 2nd in the nation.
If the Ducks get their season average of 72.1 points tonight it will only be because Arizona has 100 and just doesn’t care anymore to let them have a few baskets in garbage time.
Arizona Wildcats
This is a game that Arizona could easily get caught looking past as the Ducks offense honestly has no chance against the Cars defense if Arizona takes them seriously tonight.
I see this as a 88 – 71 type of convincing win for a Wildcats program on the verge of being a #1 seed for one of the regions of the NCAA Tournament.
Let’s not be naive enough to think that Oregon will be able to slow down Ben Mathurin, Azuolas Tubelis, and Kerr Krissa where ever they want to shoot from. Nor will the inside game of Koloko and Ballo that eat up glass and limit second shot opportunities all night.
Listen, I am not wasting your time today on discussing who does what damage for Arizona every night because if you see a Wildcat on the floor they are out there for a reason. Rebound and defend and let the offense flow off of it all night long. This total that is not even at 150 will be ours with 4 minutes to play and we will just need to sit back and wait for the final whistle to blow.
You have better things to do on a Saturday than listen to me rant and rave about the stupidity that is Arizona hoops this year and they certainly have a team that could be, and might be, in the final 4… Again!
