The Big 12 Conference Tournament is right around the corner and the Cowboys will battle with the Cyclones for the 5-seed in the standings. Currently, TCU is a half-game ahead of Iowa State in the Big 12 Conference standings while the Oklahoma State Cowboys are just a game back of the Cyclones.
TCU will finish the regular season with 2 road games against Kansas and West Virginia, so the winner of this game will stay in the fight for the 5 seed even though the Cyclones are chasing win #21 for the season. Things have just not gone smoothly for Iowa State since Big 12 play arrived and that’s because this conference is full of programs that are pretty damn good.
The Cowboys will finish up this final road game of the regular season and return home to take on the battle-tested Red Raiders on March 5. That will not make things any easier to gain momentum down the stretch having already lost 3 of their last 4 outings coming into this affair.
Oklahoma State Cowboys
The Cowboys will be underdogs in their final 2 games starting with this tilt in Ames. At a mild underdog of +3.5 points, Oklahoma State is no stranger to getting points, and their 11 – 17 ATS this season covering the line.
Despite losing 3 of their last 4 games, the last 3 outings have all needed extra time to settle the winner. Obviously, all of those games have come down to the final possession of regulation which certainly could always go to either team. The Cowboys came so close to beating Baylor just two games ago and that would have certainly changed the tone of this final run of the regular season had they had taken that win instead of losing in overtime to the Bears.
Also amazingly, the under has still held on over the last two overtime games which is not easy to do. The Cowboys’ defense is holding their own and it’s why they rank 22nd in the nation holding teams to 39.6% shooting from the floor.
Speaking of overtime, the last time these two met Iowa State took an 84 – 81 overtime win over the Cowboys and that is just another example of a close loss for this program. As you look over most of the losses this team has suffered, most of those games are coming right down to a possession or two changing the outcome.
Iowa State Cyclones
The Cyclones and Cowboys are a game apart in the Big 12 standings but the sweep of the season series would obviously break any ties for seeding in the conference tourney. With either team really chasing anything near the top-4, this is just another game that both teams can go out and play loose to get a win.
Iowa State has played 4 close games over their last 5 outings outside of the blowout loss to Oklahoma. Last time out the Cyclones earned a 1-point win over Kansas State which is, of course, a game that came down to the wire again. The victory gave the Cyclones win #20 for the year and that is certainly the mark that almost every team shoots for when the campaign begins. The Big 12 record of 7 – 9 might have set this team back a bit but the Big 12 isn’t filled with any cupcakes.
The Cyclones has 31 points come off their bench in the 74 – 73 win over Kansas State, none bigger than the 18 points provided by Caleb Grill. Grill buried six 3-pointers which accounted for all 18 of those points. Isaiah Brockington had a 17 & 8 performance which is pretty much right where he averages for the season in both points and boards.
The Cyclones defense ranks 20th in the nation guarding the arc allowing teams to only convert 29.6% of their shots and the 62.6 PPG allowed has Iowa State ranked 27th in scoring defense.
Tyrese Hunter is the only other Clone averaging double=digits this season, which is a far cry from those recent Iowa State teams we got used to seeing. I remember taking overs with this team like clockwork a few years back but things have changed in Ames.
CBB Betting Trends:
- Cyclones are 4-12 ATS in their last 16 Wednesday games.
- Under is 9-4 in the Cowboys’ last 13 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
- Under is 8-3 in the Cyclone’s last 11 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400.

I have the Cowboys and Clones in a close one because it’s just what they have been doing of late. I hope nothing stupid causes a late mistake to open up a game that was close, but this is college hoops. I think dog!
