Oklahoma Sooners
Oklahoma won’t have to win the Big 12 to find its way into the NCAA Tournament but it’s going to have to at least finish in the top half and get some big wins along the way.
The Sooners are ranked sixty-fourth in Sports-Reference’s Simple Rating System (SRS) but didn’t get a great win in the non-conference, at least not at first glance.

Oklahoma beat Minnesota (23), Oregon State (66) and Missouri (58), all on neutral floors that weren’t all that neutral.
The game against Minnesota was in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; the Sooners played Oregon State at the Moda Center, home of the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers; and they beat Missouri at the Sprint Center in Kansas City.
But in two true road games against good teams, OU lost both. First at Wichita State by five and next at Creighton by ten. Overall, the three wins have to far outweigh the two losses.
And Oklahoma did beat Kansas State in its conference opener over the weekend. Austin Reaves and Kristian Doolittle combined for forty points and OU won by five.
Texas Longhorns
Texas missed the Dance a season ago, which, given all of its talent, was a terrible disappointment. Head Coach Shaka Smart has just one Tournament appearance in his last three full seasons in Austin.
Kerwin Roach and Dylan Osetkowski have graduated and Jaxson Hayes is playing for the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans.
Matt Coleman has taken over the role of leading scorer in his junior year and is pouring in over a dozen points per game. He’s a left-hander with a smooth three-point stroke and an underrated ability to make the read and deliver a good pass off penetration.
Andrew Jones is a 6’4” guard who missed the second half of last season after undergoing cancer treatment. He can do a little bit of everything on the offensive end and Texas has needed all of it this season. Jones is averaging close to twelve per game in his comeback season.
Jericho Sims played alongside Hayes last season. This year he’s Texas’ most dependable option down low as a rim protector and rebounder.
The Longhorns are missing a playmaker on offense, though. Coleman can make some things happen, as can Jones, but someone is missing, either a true point guard or a scorer a little more physically imposing than any of Texas’ four double-digit scorers, who weigh less than 185 lbs. on average.
