ACC Conference play gets underway for Notre Dame and Boston College on Friday night when the teams meet up at Conte Forum. It’s been kind of a rough start for both squads, with the Fighting Irish having dropped three of the last four while BC has just snapped a three game losing skid.
The Eagles actually have two straight wins following their recent slide. Boston College has gone 5-0 at Chestnut Hill this season, but the visit from Notre Dame is by far their biggest challenge at home so far this season.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Notre Dame recently played in the Maui Invitational, which was held in Las Vegas this year due to COVID travel regulations in Hawaii. It wasn’t a great showing for Mike Brey’s squad, who lost 62-59 to St. Mary’s and 73-67 to Texas A&M while also whooping up on Chaminade 90-64.
St. Mary’s is 8-1 on the season and Texas A&M is 7-1 so those ND losses were to a couple of good teams. Most recently Notre Dame lost 82-72 to Illinois, which was a top 5 team to start the season so the 3-3 record for the Fighting Irish has a lot to due with the competition.
The Fighting Irish can’t use competition as an excuse when they visit Boston College on Friday night as -5.5 favorites. Luckily for Notre Dame, BC doesn’t have any sort of the interior presence that Illinois does, as the Fighting Illini post duo of Kofi Cockburn and Alfonso Plummer combined for 49 points on Monday.
Boston College Eagles
The Golden Eagles can get their signature win so far of this early season if they can take down conference foe Notre Dame. All three of Boston College’s losses have come as underdogs, 49-57 at Rhode Island as well as 68-62 to Utah and 71-65 again to URI this time at the Sunshine Slam in Dayton Beach, Florida.
The biggest thing BC has struggled to do this year is find an identity, although their 60.1 ppg allowed is in the top 50 in the country. The Eagles also have four different players that average between 10 and 12 points, so they don’t have star power but do have consistency.
DeMarr Langford leads the team with 12.4 ppg, but he’s only hit that mark once in the last five games. Notre Dame’s Dane Goodwin has gone for double figures in all six Fighting Irish games this season and Blake Wesley had 24 off the bench vs. the Illini.
