That team was led by a pair of juniors who are both back as seniors: Vinnie Shahid and Tyson Ward. They average about 28.5 points per game between the two of them, up a bit from last season, and slightly more assists than turnovers.
Ward has never been a great three-point shooter but he’s struggled extra this season, converting just 18.2 percent of his attempts thus far. Shahid’s 31.3 mark isn’t good either, especially when you consider his volume, but it doesn’t look as bad next to Ward’s.
Marquette Golden Eagles
Markus Howard continues to push limits and break new ground as the all-time leading scorer in Marquette basketball history.
He set the mark in the Golden Eagles’ first game of the season against Loyola-Maryland, in which he finished with thirty-eight points. He’s since passed 2,000 points in his career and should push up over 2,500 and approaching 3,000 if he can lead Marquette on an NCAA Tournament run.
But he needs help. He scored just twenty-seven points, combined, in Marquette’s two losses to Wisconsin and Maryland. Good teams with multiple strong defenders can lean on him and make the supporting cast try to beat them.
Still, the consensus All-American is shooting .468 on over eight three-point tries per game and cut into his turnovers a bit.
Better defenses are on their way. Marquette has finished his previous three seasons with a strength of schedule rating between 6.96 and 9.70. This season, it’s just at 4.21 and won’t move much after North Dakota State.
