North Carolina Tar Heels
After consecutive losses and a close call against UNC Central, the North Carolina Tar Heels got back on track with a 12-point win over Kentucky on Saturday.
The Wildcats led by four at the half but North Carolina came storming back in the second. Armando Bacot shot 5-for-8 from the field for a team-high 14 points.
Freshman Caleb Love and senior Garrison Brooks joined him in double-digits, as far as the starting five went.
Kerwin Walton made all three of his three-point attempts and finished with 13 points off the bench. Day’Ron Sharpe led the Heels with 11 rebounds in 21 minutes.
Brooks and Bacot lead the way for Head Coach Roy Williams but after them, six of UNC’s next eight rotational players are freshman.
So the less than dominant start is not surprising. It’s also unclear how high this team’s ceiling is. That will be determined by the development of the freshman class.
North Carolina State Wolfpack
NC State is built quite differently. It lost two leading scorers in Markelle Johnson and CJ Bryce after last school year but what remains is a solid core of experience.
Devon Daniels and Braxton Beverley are both seniors in the backcourt. Daniels leads the team at over 16 points per game and Beverley is the leading assist man.
Jericole Hellems and Manny Bates, a junior and sophomore, respectively, both average double-figures. So does freshman Cam Hayes, the highest-rated recruit Head Coach Kevin Keatts has had since he took the job at State.
The problem for the Wolfpack so far this season has been avoiding positive coronavirus tests. It played with just nine guys in a loss to Saint Louis, as well as in its most recent victory over Campbell (which it led by just two at the half before taking over in the second).
Hayes has missed two games with a positive test, as has senior forward DJ Funderburk, who is another key team leader and potential double-digit scorer.
It is unclear whether the two will play in this game but Keatts did not dismiss the possibility. Their status could be the difference between which side is favored in this game.
